Just as Charlie was sighing emotionally as he was lost in his thoughts, he suddenly heard a familiar voice next to him asking, “Mr. Wade, what are you thinking about that you seem to be so deep in your thoughts?”
Charlie was slightly startled. He turned around and saw that Marianne had already arrived behind him at some point.
He was surprised and also a little scared at the same time.
He had not expected that he would be so numb and careless to the point that he had not even noticed it when an ordinary person like Marianne had approached him.
He came back to his senses immediately, smiled slightly, and said to Marianne, “I was thinking about some things that happened in the past.”
Having said that, Charlie asked her, “Miss Marianne, when did you come?”
“I just arrived.” Marianne also smiled slightly and then walked over to Charlie’s side as she looked at the lively scene below and asked Charlie, “Were you thinking about your parents just now?”
“Yes...” Charlie did not deny it, nodded slightly, and then smiled in a self-deprecating manner as he said softly, “I still miss them even though it has already been twenty years...”
Marianne and Charlie were pretty much on the same frequency when it came to this topic.
She could basically understand Charlie’s feelings completely, so she could not help but sigh softly as she stepped forward, summoned up her courage, and took the initiative to grab Charlie’s hand. After that, she squeezed the palm of his hand slightly as if she was trying to use this method to show her concern and comfort him.
Marianne was afraid that Charlie would overthink it, so she changed the subject and said, “Mr. Campbell seems to be in a much better state than he was yesterday.”
Charlie laughed in a self-deprecating manner and said, “I did not read many books. I have been struggling at the bottom of society for twenty years, so how could I have had so much time and energy to read more books? I only know about this because my father told me about it when I was young.”
Marianne said seriously, “In truth, it’s never too late to read at any time. Mr. Wade. If you can spare some time, you can try to set a plan for yourself first. You can try reading a book a month first before reading two books in a month or even subsequently reading one book in a week.”
Having said that, Marianne then said again, “Mr. Wade, I can help you make a reading plan if you don’t mind.”
Charlie could not help but tease her, “Will you be conducting spot checks to check on my progress or assigning homework to me at that time, then?”
Marianne smiled shyly and said, “I can do that too if you need it, Mr. Wade.”
