Charlie originally wanted to help as well, but Mrs. Lewis drove him out of the kitchen with the excuse that he was a guest from afar. She couldn't possibly make the guest work in the kitchen.
Facing her resolute rejection, Charlie didn’t insist any further.
Stephanie took the opportunity to show Charlie around the villa.
At eight o'clock, Mrs. Lewis finished preparing a sumptuous meal with Claudia's aid.
Stephanie took out a bottle of juice from the refrigerator. She said to Charlie with a cheery grin, "Brother Charlie, no one drinks liquor here. We take juice instead!" Charlie nodded. He didn't mind. He followed her lead, took the juice bottle from her, and poured it into four cups.
Mrs. Lewis was in a particularly good mood. She picked up her glass and smiled a s she cheered, "Come! Let's drink together and welcome Charlie to Canada!"
Stephanie applauded immediately. Smiling as well, she added, "Welcome, Brother Charlie! I hope you'll visit us in Vancouver more often in future!"
Charlie also raised his glass, smiling along with all of them.'Thank you for your hospitality, everyone. I promise I'll drop by more often when I have time.”
Claudia, on the other hand, didn’t share their joy. It was already dark, so she was feeling a little apprehensive. She feared that Charlie would change his mind and wanted to leave with Stephanie quickly.
She couldn't focus on the dinner. All the while, she silently prayed that no accident would occur that night.
Stephanie didn't catch Claudia's forlorn behavior. She winked at Claudia and said happily, "Claudia, you're meeting Brother Charlie for the first time today. You should drink too!"
Claudia shook off her apprehension and flashed Stephanie a small smile. She picked up her glass and said to Charlie, "M r. Wade, let me offer a toast to you."
Stephanie interjected, "Oh! You shouldn't call him Mr. Wade anymore. Just call him Brother Charlie, like what I did!"
Her gratitude towards Mrs. Lewis and Stephanie needed no mention, but Charlie’s genuine words despite their first meeting made her feel loved and protected.
Growing up, she was the eldest daughter and didn't have an elder brother. Instead, she had two younger brothers whom she had to care for everywhere she went. She was a mature and reliable sister good at taking care of others, but she was still a young girl. Every so often, she wished she could have an elder brother who would take care of and protect her. This was especially so after the tragedy that fell her family. Her desire for loving protection grew even more.
She then recalled the event that took place at the convenience store earlier that day.
When Gigi brought Hagrid and her two followers all the way to the convenience store to harass her, it was Charlie who took the initiative to stand up for her.
Yet, she couldn't figure out what Charlie did to make Hagrid, who had always been obedient to Gigi, suddenly lose his mind. It had looked like Hagrid was being
impulsive due to the heat of the moment, but for some reason, Claudia felt that things weren't as simple as they appeared...
