ASHANTI'S POV.
My eyes flicker open and I expect the sight of a sunlit bedroom to come into view, but I'm shocked to see a dimly lit bedroom with its window curtains drawn shut. It's nightfall already and that means I've been napping for a very long time.
Touring around the entire pack Tessa today left me stupid tired and I fell on the bed the moment I got home. I'm still in the outfit I was wearing when I got back.
My eyes daintily roam about every corner of the bedroom and I stop when something crosses my mind.
Alpha Reagan.
It's nightfall. He should be at home…
My thoughts are interrupted by the sound of footsteps coming from the closet room and soon, his masculine frame comes into view at the door. My lips curve into a smile that spreads to every corner of my face. My heart starts somersaulting in my chest.
He's here.
My man is here.
“Hey baby.” His feathery voice tingles on my skin like phantom caresses and I’m smiling like an idiot by the time he gets to the bed and perches by my side.
“Hey.” My own voice is far from feathery. It’s croaked and sleepy and surely leaves bruises on his skin, but he doesn't seem to mind. He leans closer and joins our lips in a brief passionate kiss that leaves me wanting more.
He smells like soap and mint and Reagan.
He just showered.
When he looks at me again, I'm blushing from head to toe and I don't know what to do with myself.
“You're awake.”
“Yes. I am.” I say nodding. “Has it been long since you came home?”
“An hour or so.” He says, shaking his head from side to side and curving his lips in a manner that shows his uncertainty.
“Why didn't you wake me up?”
“Tessa and I couldn't stop talking about it today.” I stand in front of him and look up at his perfectly sculpted face. “What's going to happen to us if you were to find your second chance mate?” I ask out of nowhere.
That's not a question that has ever crossed my mind. It just came out of nowhere and now that I've mentioned it, my heart has begun to beat fast.
It's true that Lena has signalled and keeps signalling to me that he is my mate, but it seems his wolf isn't doing the same to him. While I've decided to put my mind at ease with the theory that his previous loss did great damage to his wolf, making it impossible for him to feel our mate bond and notify him about our mate status, it doesn't necessarily mean that's the real theory.
What if his wolf isn't telling him anything because he isn't feeling anything for real?
What if it's just Lena tripping really hard and we actually aren't mates?
What if his true mate is out there and it's just a matter of time before they meet each other?
Oh, Sweet goddess. I'm going to lose my mind!
These thoughts are ripping me apart from within and I'm trying hard to stop my breaths from going out too fast.
“Hey… hey… baby.” He calls gently, cupping my face in his big hands. “Look at me.” I do that. His eyes are searching my face and mine are swimming with a thousand possibilities why this relationship of ours could be short lived. “Nothing of that sort is going to happen.”
