NARRATOR
ONE MONTH LATER…
The cold night wind whipped through Theron’s dark hair.
His eyes, as cool and sharp as his father Elliot’s, the current Regent of the Elemental Realm, stared at the distant mountains.
The former Dukes of Everhart now controlled every inch of land in this realm that had once been hidden and protected by darkness.
The pounding of hooves over the forest grass thudded in his ears.
The animal ran hard under the moonlight, carrying him to roam the wide tracts around his duchy.
Pure freedom was what Theron’s spirit felt, yet he kept an iron grip on the reins, the same way he did with his fate.
As a lycan, born of a beast and a sorceress, power coursed through his veins and, from the day he was born, responsibility weighed on his shoulders.
Unlike his sisters, Theron liked bureaucracy, that intoxicating control over other people’s lives, but on days like today he just craved letting go.
“Hyah!” He urged the horse on and steered it toward the Everhart mansion.
He lived mostly at the palace, but his parents had returned from their trip across the new continents and Elliot had taken command again, leaving him with free time.
Theron rode through the canyon flanked by the high mountain slopes.
Weird things always happened in this area.
It felt like a magnet for trouble, wild energies, specters, and calamities.
Today was no exception…
He was so deep in his thoughts that when he felt a tremor beneath his feet, he reacted late.
“What the hell is this?!” he roared, voice like thunder, then soothed the frightened animal.
Pebbles began to rain down over his head, shaken loose by the violent jolt.
The quake lasted only seconds, but it was strong enough to threaten a rockslide, so he pushed the pace to get clear of danger.
However, in the middle of the night, a ferocious roar blew every alarm wide open.
He knew that aura too well; the breeze also carried familiar scents.
Beof and his sister Amara…
Without thinking, he dove deeper into the maze of the mountain chain.
Amara’s scream floated up from the depths, held by Beof’s firm hand, and by something coiled around her legs.
“Amara!” Beof roared in agony, feeling her slip from his grip as a heavy rock smashed into his back.
“Jump, Beof, now!” Theron ordered, gauging their only chance to survive.
He dove headfirst after the powerful lycan, who fought to keep hold of his mate and shield her from any harm.
Darkness swallowed them like the mouth of a monster.
The mountain shuddered and the massive stones crashed down, sealing off the hole that had opened out of nowhere.
Deep in the earth’s guts, three lycans fell through a void that seemed bottomless.
The green light still flickered in their eyes and made their fur prickle.
Theron could recognize magic when he saw it. It ran in his veins too, though his animal side held most of the control.
This passage to an unknown place was the work of a wild, out-of-control spell.
They didn’t know how long they plunged through that strange burrow, but at last they glimpsed the bottom and braced for a brutal impact.
“Shift to your elemental form, Amara, shift, my love!” Beof pleaded, feeling the end rush closer.
