637.Chapter 637
“You idiot! Trying to pull tricks right under my nose?” Sophie had already seen through Adeline’s pathetic little stunt, but she didn’t even bother to acknowledge it.
Her confidence in her mastery of parasites and poisons was unshakable.
She was certain that in all of Hasen City, no one but her could save Caleb.
That’s why she didn’t care about whatever schemes Adeline or Dale might come up with.
On the contrary, once they exhausted all their efforts and realized Caleb was beyond saving, their despair would make them even easier to manipulate.
Sophie wasn’t the type to let things slide.
Letting them scheme was one thing, but letting them off without a price? Not a chance.
“Your parents messed up, so you’ll be the one to pay for it,” Sophie said coldly.
The moment her words landed, Caleb’s frail body twisted in agony. His face contorted grotesquely, and he thrashed on the bed as though consumed by unbearable pain.
“Aaaaaaaah!” That day, Caleb’s screams once again echoed through the Marquis’s estate.
“Someone, get in here.” After venting her fury on Caleb, Sophie wiped the blood off her hands with a handkerchief.
Her expression was one of disgust as she tossed the stained cloth onto Caleb’s barely conscious face, then called out to the servants waiting outside.
“L–Lady Sophie, do you have any orders?”
The maid entered from outside, her head bowed so low she seemed afraid to even breathe. Standing at the doorway, trembling, she asked.
The title “Lady Sophie” was something Sophie had forced everyone in the estate to use.
She despised being a mere concubine. The moment the opportunity arose, she would make sure to claim her rightful place as the legitimate wife.
Of course, such a change required the approval of the Nevill family elders, and Sophie wasn’t about to risk any mistakes at such a critical time. For now, she had put that plan on hold.
But when it came to the servants, she didn’t see the need to wait. After all, it was only a matter of time before she officially became Lady Sophie.
Sophie shot the maid a frosty glare, letting out a faint scoff. “The Duke’s steward came today. Did he say what he wanted?”
Even though she had no intention of meeting him, that didn’t mean she wasn’t keeping tabs on the Duke’s estate.
The maid shook her head nervously and replied, “The gatekeeper said the steward only brought a letter for the Marquis and didn’t say anything else. Without your orders, Lady Sophie, we didn’t dare ask further, so we really don’t know.”
Thinking she could avoid punishment, the maid tried to justify herself by claiming they were simply following orders.
But in the next moment, a sharp, excruciating pain tore through her head, as if something was viciously gnawing at her brain.
She let out a blood–curdling scream, blood streaming from her eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. She collapsed lifelessly to the ground, her breath extinguished in an instant.
The other maids and servants outside froze in terror, their faces pale as if they were standing before the executioner’s blade.
“Useless trash. Keeping you around is just a waste of my parasites,” Sophie said coldly, her tone dripping with disdain..
She stepped forward and deftly retrieved a long, writhing parasite that had crawled out of the maid’s ear.
Without missing a beat, she turned to the trembling crowd and pointed at a servant. “You. I’m giving you permission to leave the estate today. Find out why the Duke’s steward came and what’s in that letter. If you come back without answers, you’d better prepare your grave.”
In the past two weeks, Caleb’s courtyard had become a death zone. More than half the servants had already perished.
Even the newly assigned maids and servants couldn’t escape the same grim fate.
‘At this rate, none of us will survive her control. We’re all doomed,’ the servant thought bitterly.
Back at the Marquis’s estate, the young servant hurried to share the news with Sophie.
“Eliza is changing her surname?” Sophie shot to her feet, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
‘Changing her surname? That’s fantastic–absolutely fantastic!‘
If Eliza really goes through with it, Sophie would become the Stonor family’s only daughter. The rightful daughter! That title would be hers, no one else’s!
Though Sophie is already married, her heart had always been set on being recognized as the Duke of Mowbay’s legitimate daughter. Becoming the Marquis’s wife? That was just a stepping stone.
And if she becomes the legitimate daughter, her promotion to the Marquis’s primary wife would be inevitable.
After all, the reason she ended up as Caleb’s concubine was because of her status as an illegitimate child.
Everyone knows she’s the Duke’s illegitimate daughter, but once her status changes, she’ll be the one and only legitimate daughter of the Duke of Mowbay!
Those who mock her behind her back wouldn’t dare utter a single word in front of her anymore.
And once she secures her position as Caleb’s rightful wife, who in the world would still dare to laugh at her?
