"This is the Ghost Clan's ancestral homeland."
Ghost Seven stopped. "Every structure here clings to the cliffs of the abyss, so from the outside, the settlement looks like an inverted city.
"An underground river flows at the very bottom, carrying nether-spring water. The caves at the top belong to the clan elders. I'll take you to Elder Nether."
He led the group up a winding stone staircase.
The steps were narrow and steep. Solid rock rose on one side, while a bottomless abyss yawned on the other.
At several cave mouths along the way, Ghost Clan cultivators leaned out to study Jared and his companions. Their gazes held curiosity and appraisal, but no hostility.
After walking for about 15 minutes, the group reached a relatively spacious cave.
A black curtain hung across the entrance. An embroidered blue sigil glowed upon it with the faint light of nether flame.
Ghost Seven drew the curtain aside and made room for him. "After you, Mr. Chance."
The cavern was far larger inside than it appeared from without.
Several blue-glowing minerals had been embedded in the ceiling, bathing the chamber in a gentle halo.
Ancient Ghost Clan sigils covered all four walls. Every line moved slowly, releasing profound soul power.
A slight old man sat at the center of the cavern.
His back was hunched like an old tree bent beneath the weight of years. An oversized black robe draped from his shoulders, its hem trailing across the ground and almost concealing his feet.
His face was gaunt and ancient. Nearly translucent skin stretched over it, scored with wrinkles as deep as knife cuts.
His eyes were blue, like two concentrated masses of nether flame burning with fathomless light in the shadows.
A faint brightness entered those eyes when their gaze met Jared.
"Welcome, guests of the Ghost Clan. I am Elder Nether."
The old man's voice was deep and rasping, like sandpaper dragged across wood. "Ghost Seven's message has already reached me.
"You must be the young man who confronted the celestials and slew a Grand Zenith Immortal with chaotic force."
Jared bowed slightly. "I'm Jared Chance. It's an honor to meet you, Elder Nether. You give me too much credit. A far stronger man helped with what happened there. I merely took advantage of the opportunity he created."
Elder Nether nodded slowly. His blue gaze remained on Jared for a long time. "Good. You are neither arrogant nor impatient. The fact that chaotic force has taken root within you proves the stability of your foundation.
"The Ghost Clan has not hosted outsiders for many years. I am pleased that you have come."
He raised a withered finger and gave it a small wave. Several black stone stools rose from the floor. "Sit."
The visitors settled onto the stone stools.
The young acolyte sat beside Master Veridian and examined the sigils covering the walls with open curiosity.
Elder Nether addressed Jared. "Young man, I know you've only just arrived in the Twenty-First Firmament and still understand very little about it.
"Let me begin with the most important fact.
"The celestials here are completely different from those in the Twentieth Firmament.
"In the Twentieth, they are divided and each faction rules itself.
"Here, family is the foundation of their power, and three great families rule Dubhe Continent together.
"The Suncrest, Silvermoon, and Starcrest families each command a supreme divine authority."
Jared allowed the elder to continue in silence.
Elder Nether continued, "The Suncrest family commands the Divine Authority of the Sun.
