The King Of Warriors novel (Jared Chance) novel Chapter 6698

The attack blindsided the Demonic Cultivators.

Some were still browsing for spiritual materials in shops, half a mineral ore clutched in their hands.

Some had only just stepped outside their homes, an outer robe still hanging half-dressed from one shoulder.

One had been buying a sweet pastry for a child at a street stall. The child still held the half-eaten pastry, staring wide-eyed at the celestial cultivators charging toward them.

"Run!"

"The celestials have gone insane!"

"Why are they killing us?!"

The Demonic Cultivators scattered like a flock of startled birds.

Some fled into narrow alleys, trying to use the maze of streets to shake their pursuers.

Others released demonic energy and tried to fly, only to be slammed back down by a golden net of light covering the sky.

Still others hid in houses and pounded desperately on locked doors, but no one dared open them.

The celestial cultivators had come prepared.

Squad after squad of gold-armored fighters had already spread throughout the city. Like a giant net being drawn tight, they blocked every possible escape route.

Soon, fighting erupted everywhere at once, like countless fuses catching fire.

Golden divine light collided with black demonic energy, producing muffled blasts that sounded like heavy hammers striking soaked cloth.

Screams rose one after another—men and women, old and young.

Cries for help, sobbing, shattering weapons, and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the ground blended into a muddy, brutal symphony that shattered the peace Starfall City had known for years.

Jared slowly closed the shutter and turned around. His expression had grown grave, and complicated emotion churned deep in his purple eyes.

"The celestials have declared war on the Demonic Cultivators."

Gwendolyn's pupils tightened. Shock flashed through her ice-blue eyes. "Declared war? Why?"

"It has to be because of what we did in the Nineteenth Firmament."

Jared's voice remained calm, but the calm was like a thin sheet of ice over a violent current. "Grand Elder Greenwood is dead, and the celestial forces in the Nineteenth Firmament were destroyed. Aureon Suncrest was never going to let that go.

"So he's taking revenge on every Demonic Cultivator. He wants everyone to see what happens when someone crosses the celestials."

Master Veridian lowered the sunflower seeds in his hand. The joking look disappeared from his face, and rare seriousness entered his cloudy eyes. "He's trying to wipe out the entire demon race."

"Exactly."

Jared nodded. "Aureon is using this to make every demon understand the price of defying the celestials.

"It's meant to make an example out of someone. Except he isn't killing one person to scare the rest—he's slaughtering an entire race."

At that moment, hurried footsteps thundered up from the floor below.

They were heavy and uneven, as if someone were running up the stairs while nearly stumbling over every other step.

A moment later, someone started pounding on their door. The knocks came hard and fast, almost violent enough to shake the panel apart.

Jared opened it.

The innkeeper stood outside, his deeply wrinkled face pale with fear.

Fine beads of cold sweat covered his forehead. His hands trembled slightly. He glanced across the four guests, then instinctively looked toward the end of the hall before lowering his voice.

"Something terrible's happening outside! The celestials suddenly started attacking Demonic Cultivators. They're killing them on sight! You four... you should stay in your rooms and don't go out."

"Thank you for the warning." Jared gave him a polite nod. "Do you know why the celestials suddenly turned on them?"
