"You..."
Blackraven's voice shook despite himself. "Why are you here?"
"Why couldn't I be here?"
Master Veridian pushed his chest out, planted both hands on his hips, and lifted his chin. "I am Mr. Chance's bodyguard. Protecting him is my job. If you want to kill him, you have to get past me first."
Then he glanced back at Jared and whispered, "Mr. Chance, that line had enough presence, right?"
Jared nodded while holding back a laugh.
"Plenty."
Blackraven's expression changed several times before it settled into a cold sneer.
"Old man, I advise you not to meddle. The Golden Crow clan is not something you can afford to offend."
"The Golden Crow clan?"
Master Veridian laughed, full of contempt. "When I roamed the Twentieth Firmament, your clan had to take another road when they saw me coming. Now one little Golden Crow assassin dares bark in my face?"
"Bragging." Anger sharpened Blackraven's voice. "If you were that powerful, why are you still hiding in the Nineteenth Firmament?"
"You do not understand."
Master Veridian stroked his beard and put on a profound look. "That is called keeping a low profile. True masters hide among ordinary people. The noisy ones, like you, usually die young."
Blackraven's mouth twitched.
He stopped talking and attacked.
His body flashed forward. Golden claw shadows filled the air, each one carrying enough force to tear space apart. Every strike went straight for Master Veridian's vital points.
Master Veridian did not move.
When Blackraven's claws were about to reach his face, the old man finally raised his right hand.
His dry palm swept lightly through the air.
That was all.
Blackraven's full-power strike seemed to land on soft cotton. Its force vanished cleanly, and his body lurched forward out of balance.
"That's it?"
Master Veridian shook his head, disappointment all over his face. "I thought a Golden Crow assassin would have some skill. With this little ability, you still came out to kill people?"
Blackraven's face flushed.
He spun around and attacked again.
This time, he pushed out all his power. Golden light surged behind him and formed the enormous image of a Golden Crow. Scorching heat twisted the air as the illusion charged toward Master Veridian.
"Golden Crow Scorches the Sky!"
Master Veridian's eyes brightened a little.
"Now that has some flavor."
He still did not step back.
Just before the Golden Crow illusion crashed into him, he opened his right palm.
Blue-green light poured out.
The two powers collided.
Boom.
The entire rocky slope shook. The shock wave lifted broken stones and sent them flying like hidden weapons.
Dust rolled across the air.
When it cleared, Blackraven was kneeling on the ground, gasping. Blood slid from the corner of his mouth.
A clear palm print had been burned into his chest. His clothes were torn open, and the flesh beneath them was scorched black.
He was badly hurt.
Master Veridian stood exactly where he had stood before.
Not even the hem of his robe was wrinkled.
"Still fighting, kid?" Master Veridian asked, his voice full of amusement.
Blackraven gritted his teeth and tried to rise.
His legs would not obey.
He tried again.
Failed again.
