The Heart Left Behind (Cole and Yvonne) novel Chapter 238

"Let's see what he's trying to do. He can't just keep me here anyway."

Fabian was not a nice person, so Murphy and I arranged for quite a lot of bodyguards with us.

Fabian set the meeting at his new restaurant, where the entrance was decorated lavishly in gold. The staff members, about 30 of them, were barely in their 20s.

I wondered if they could fight. I guessed that Fabian had hired them because they had enough experience in the underworld.

"Hello, Mr. Joplin." A server in a black suit walked up to me. He looked slightly older compared to the others. I guessed he was Fabian's right-hand man.

"How do you know me?"

"Mr. Zahn has shown me your photo. You're so young and talented."

"Alright, enough with the flattery." I raised my hand to stop him. "Where's Mr. Zahn?"

Murphy stood behind me, looking around this lavishly decorated restaurant. It looked more like someone's personal home.

It looked like Fabian has been raking in money all these years. As for how "clean" the money was, no one knew.

The man reached his hand out to me and said, "Mr. Joplin, please call me Sebastian."

"Are you one of Mr. Zahn's right-hand men?"

Sebastian slowly retracted his hand when he saw that I was not planning to shake it. "You can say so. I'll take you to him right away."

At that moment, I had no other interest other than seeing Fabian.

Fabian reserved a private room for us. I only noticed him when I was about a hundred yards away from him.

"Mr. Zahn."

I had not seen him for a few years. He looked older but also more authoritative. Even just by sitting there, one could feel the air of oppression he carried with him. Everyone around him lowered their heads, not daring to look directly at him.

I met with his gaze. "It's been a few years. You're looking better than ever."

"You too, Mr. Joplin. I heard you even have two wives now?"

"You've changed personnel."

"You have a good memory, Mr. Zahn." I smiled ambiguously at him. He even knew how many marriages I had been through. It was impossible that he did not know about Murphy. He was just trying to find out how high Murphy's ranking was next to me.

"We're in good company."

I raised my hand. Other than Murphy, the others knowingly stepped outside.

Fabian did the same. Sebastian and the other subordinates left the room together, leaving the three of us in the huge dining room.

I was a little surprised. Was Sebastian not his right-hand man?

Fabian read my mind and said with a smile, "Mr. Joplin, in our line of work, secrecy is of the utmost importance. I don't want too many people to know too many things."

He sized Murphy up and added, "I'll advise you to keep your mouth shut. Don't get yourself killed."

Murphy's expression turned ugly. He looked at me anxiously as if trying to prove his loyalty.
