Jared didn't agree with Chris' tactics, but neither did he stop him.
Chris noticed Jared's hesitation and threatened him half-seriously, "Jared, don't forget—we're on the same boat now. No one can escape this."
If they didn't take me down, they would never be able to get to the top.
…
On the way home, Xavier cried until he fell asleep in the car. I looked at his tear-stricken face and felt my heart clench.
How could he change so much in a few short months?
"Jonas, let me ask you something." I stopped the car by the side of the road and looked at Jonas, who was sitting in the passenger seat.
"Daddy, do tell." He cowered a little bit in fright. I touched his face and tried my best to coax him, asking, "Do you like Mr. Dawson?"
"I don't like him. I'm afraid of him."
My heart skipped a beat as I sized Jonas up.
"Why are you afraid of him?"
"He likes to hug me, but I only like it when you hug me."
As I expected! I clenched my fists tight, feeling disgusted at the thought of Quentin.
"Is there anything else?"
Jonas pondered seriously. When I saw the fear in his eyes, I immediately stopped him. "You can stop thinking about it. I was just curious to know."
"Daddy, I find Mr. Dawson weird. One time, I saw him kiss a boy in our class." That scene frightened him as he knew that it was a bad thing. "I ran off, but I think I heard the boy crying."
I started to realize that things were not as simple as they seem. I looked at Xavier and thought about his relationship with Quentin.
I shuddered.
"Has Xavier ever been alone with Mr. Dawson?"
A young child like him could understand gratitude. But at the thought of Yvonne, I was seething with rage once more. The journey back home was less than half an hour.
I carried Xavier back to his room. I had just placed him down in his bed when he suddenly opened his eyes. "The live stream."
His breathing was all staggered, but when he saw me, he slowly calmed down.
"Xavier, I thought you stopped going on live streams?"
His reaction did not seem like he had stopped going on live streams, but I had not seen him the day before.
Xavier hesitated as tears welled up in his eyes.
"Is your mom lying to me again?"
"Daddy…" Xavier pulled me back and said gently, "I've stopped. I only show my face from time to time."
He had not been on live streams for the past few days, but Yvonne did not allow him to do anything else. He still had to stay by the side and watch her. He even had to ask for permission to go to the toilet.
