When Lorraine stepped out of the bathroom, she noticed the fresh towel by the door and blushed. After spending 15 minutes mentally preparing herself in the bathroom, she emerged to find the room empty.
"Cole? Are you asleep?" She looked around but could not find me, and just as she was about to check the guest room, Jonas came running out barefoot.
"Ms. Sommerton," Jonas mumbled sleepily.
Remembering what I had said about Jonas' improving condition lately, Lorraine picked him up and gently pulled his hands away from his eyes. "Did you have a nightmare?"
"I miss Daddy," Jonas said in his sweet, childish voice, melting Lorraine's heart.
"Let's go find him together," she offered softly.
She knocked on the guest room door and waited a few minutes before hearing footsteps inside. "Who is it? Lorraine?"
Seeing Lorraine holding Jonas, I pushed aside my confusion. I was worried that Jonas might be feeling unwell. "Why are you up suddenly?"
"I miss you, Daddy," Jonas replied.
I blinked in surprise. Ever since I noticed Jonas' psychological struggles, he had not expressed himself this openly.
"Jonas, do you want to sleep with Daddy?" Lorraine's gentle voice was particularly soothing, and Jonas, who likely had a nightmare, began to calm down at the sound of it.
He wrapped his arms tightly around Lorraine's neck. "I want to sleep with Daddy. Will you sleep with us too?"
The smile froze on my face as I took Jonas into my arms. "Jonas, Ms. Sommerton won't be sleeping with us. We'll sleep separately."
I laughed awkwardly. "Jonas, how should I explain this..."
It was not really about Jonas—my main concern was Lorraine. I wracked my brain for an explanation, having just promised Lorraine I would not pressure her. I could not use Jonas as an excuse to sleep in the same room.
"Jonas, Ms. Sommerton and I still have some things to work out, so we can't sleep in the same room yet."
"Why not?" Jonas looked up at me innocently.
"Because..." I was at a loss for words and looked to Lorraine for help.
After a moment's hesitation, she suddenly nodded. "I'll come in soon. You two go ahead and get ready for bed."
