Yvonne looked at Lorraine with surprise. She had expected Lorraine to immediately agree, so she asked, "Do you want to be Jonas' stepmother?'
"This isn't about what I want. It's about whether Cole will give you custody."
Lorraine knew Yvonne was trying to exploit her as a stepping stone, but there was no way she'd give Yvonne a chance.
"I really like Jonas. If Cole and I have children in the future, I think Jonas would make an excellent older brother," Lorraine stated.
Yvonne's expression darkened, and her eyes were cold and menacing as though she was facing a sworn enemy. "Jonas will never be anyone's older brother."
He was Xavier's older brother, and she'd never allow him to be a sibling to another woman's child.
"You're getting too worked up, Ms. Langley." Now that they were sitting across from each other, Yonne seemed much easier to provoke.
Lorraine tapped on the contract on the table. "Every clause in here is unfavorable to Cole. What makes you think I'll help you?"
She had seen through Yvonne's intentions and didn't hesitate to expose her. "Do you think I can't accept Jonas? I'm telling you, I adore him, and he's a wonderful child."
At the thought of Jonas' gentle and considerate nature, she couldn't help feeling a pang of sorrow. "I'm more than willing to care for him alongside Cole."
Yvonne crossed her legs with a lofty air. "Aren't you worried that after you've spent so much effort raising him, he'll come back to me?"
She remained perfectly confident, especially after hearing Lorraine declare she'd take care of Jonas. For some reason, she found it quite amusing and stated, "No one can ever forget about their mother, and that's especially the case for someone as kind-hearted as Jonas."
If it were Xavier, he might bear a grudge. But Jonas wasn't like that. He'd only wonder if Yvonne had her reasons.
I had anticipated Yvonne going to confront Lorraine. Even if she didn't love Jonas, she'd never allow him to have a stepmother. This was a direct challenge to her authority.
I had expected Lorraine to sign the papers and was surprised to find that she didn't. It seemed she loved Jonas more than I had imagined.
I stepped in front of Lorraine to shield her behind me and stared down at Yvonne while on high alert. "You came quicker than I thought."
After glancing out the window, I added, "Jared has been waiting outside for quite a while. Why not invite him in for a drink?"
I recounted how they had first met at the bar, and it seemed ironic that we were having a confrontation in the same setting.
Seeing Yvonne's expression darken, I couldn't resist a sarcastic jab. "Jared has quite the tolerance to bring you here and confront my fiancée. Isn't he worried that you'll cheat on him?"
