Noticing the mocking expression on Yvonne's face, I raised my hand just as her voice died away.

A sharp slap echoed in the air. Yvonne clutched her cheek and gawked at me in disbelief.

"This is the first time I've ever landed hands on anyone. Consider yourself lucky," I said curtly.

"Cole, are you out of your mind?" She gritted her teeth in anger.

Well yes, I was. I stepped closer and sneered at the dull look in her eyes. "As a mother, not only are you not comforting Jonas, but you're openly mocking him? Do you even know why Jonas ended up this way?"

I turned my icy gaze to Xavier, who had always mirrored her demeanor.

"You're accusing me of poor parenting? Look at your son; what's so great about him?"

I scooped Jonas into my arms and was fully aware that today's proposal was ruined, but it didn't matter. At least I had seen Yvonne's true colors.

Jonas' face had gone pale, and his body was rigid. He clearly hadn't expected Yvonne, his mother, to say such hurtful things about him.

He looked up at her, his eyes brimming with hurt. "Mom, do you hate me that much?"

Jonas' voice was tinged with confusion. He hadn't done anything wrong, so why was Yvonne so hostile toward him?

"Jonas, no, please… That's not how it is. I just lost my temper for a bit. Please don't get mad at me, okay?"

Yvonne reached out and tried to carry Jonas, but I stepped back and avoided her touch. "What else do you plan to do to Jonas?"

He took a deep breath and questioned me in a feigned mature tone, "Why did you slap Mommy? You two are the couple here!"

His glare passed me and landed on Lorraine, filled with resentment.

"Xavier, you're just a child. I always thought you didn't understand much, but now, I see you're just like your mother, so I'll say this once," I said as I crouched down and rested my hand gently on his head.

Both were my children, and I wouldn't play favorites. I'd also never let anyone harm either of them.

"Jonas is your brother, and I love him. I won't go easy on you if you ever try to hurt him. As for Lorraine, we'll get married, and she'll be your new mommy if you live with me. I expect you to treat her with respect."

Xavier's eyes widened, ablaze with fury.
