Yvonne was utterly baffled. She felt as if Jared's eyes were following her every move.
Looking around and seeing no one familiar, she let out a sigh of relief. But every movement she made was clearly observed by Jared.
"How could I lie to you? Something came up. Talk later." Yvonne hung up the phone and walked into the ward with a cheerful stride.
…
I studied the documents Murphy handed me with an increasingly dark expression. "Just as I thought," I muttered.
The culprit had some connection to the police officer who came today.
"They have to be part of a gang, but their specific operations remain unclear," Murphy reported. "I also heard that the man has been released. I've sent our men to track him down, but we haven't located him yet."
"Even if he did manage to get out, that doesn't guarantee his survival." It was obvious that the man was just a pawn, and he highly likely couldn't escape death.
"No need to search for him. Find his family," I ordered. If he was alive, he'd show up on his own. And if he was dead, his family would surely know something useful.
Murphy picked up the documents and turned to leave. Just as he opened the door, he saw Yvonne standing outside.
"What are you doing here?" My expression darkened instantly at the sight of the unwelcome visitor.
I wasn't even bothered to put on a facade. It was a good thing Jonas was out for a follow-up check-up with Lorraine and wouldn't see her.
"I made you some food so that you could recover," Yvonne explained.
Her sudden attentiveness caught me off guard, and I asked, "Do you need something from me?"
Yvonne froze briefly as she lifted the lid of the lunch box. Then, she cast me a puzzled expression. "Why would you say that?"
"I figured you'd only be here if there's something you need."
Yvonne could hear the sarcasm in my voice, and her expression turned unpleasant. Still, she forced a smile. "I was just worried about you."
Yvonne paused as she pushed the door open. There was a flicker of sadness in his eyes.
"I just came to check on you," Yvonne said, maintaining her poise. Even now, she carried herself with grace and pride.
"Now that you've seen me, leave." I rarely lost my temper with women, but today, I was at my limit.
"Cole, are you still mad at me? Are you mad that I proposed the divorce?" Yvonne attributed my attitude to the belief that I still loved her though we were divorced.
"You're good at flattering yourself, aren't you?" I pulled off the covers and slowly approached her. "Yes, I did admire your confidence and how you commanded the business world with charisma. But now, you disgust me and make me sick. The farther you stay away from me, the better. Don't ever show up in front of me again."
Yvonne's eyes reddened. No one had ever dared talk to her in such a manner, not even at her lowest. But she felt guilty and decided not to argue. "I'll just pretend you're in a bad mood today," she grumbled.
"I've never felt better. Now, stop clinging to me; we're never getting back together."
Yvonne wiped her tears and cautiously asked, "Who will you get with, then? Lorraine?"
