Derek knew very well why Arcus was here—Frank wanted his family business and would take control over it like how the Mystic Sky Guild took over BM Group.
However, Derek was not interested in becoming anyone's pawn. Not only would he get nothing out of it, but he might even get killed for nothing.
As such, he would rather content himself with making money. Who knew if that abundant wealth might get him somewhere eventually?
On the other hand, Arcus was unsure as to how he should react to that.
He was surprised that Derek responded so quickly and resolutely, when Arcus was just probing him.
It was not shocking now that even the likes of Sally York would not mess with him.
Still, Arcus asked, "I don't think a verbal promise is all that convincing, Mr. Costner. Don't you agree?"
After all, whale Derek was not a pathological liar despite not wearing his heart on his sleeve, Arcus would still prefer having some form of assurance!
Derek simply shrugged at Arcus. "In that case, speaking further is unnecessary. Neither of us can trust each other because we can't read minds. But doesn't Mr. Frankton control a higher power? He could impose a binding pact that would kill me should I break my promise."
Arcus smiled in wry amusement—and here he thought his trip here to Shanton would inevitably lead to a blood bath.
As it turned out, Derek did not value his family's legacy all that much, even letting Frank take the reins.
How amusing!
"I'm awash with emotion that you have such resolve, Mr. Costner. Here, three cheers to your health!" Arcus raised his glass and chugged his drink, appearing completely unaffected.
Derek chuckled. "Don't worry—I'm buying. Take your time."
Nonetheless, after walking Pat to his car and turning to leave, Arcus ran headlong into a towering, elderly man wearing a solemn red suit.
He was smiling but also standing in Arcus's way with dozens of bodyguards behind him.
"To what do I owe the pleasure, sir?" Arcus asked politely, knowing that the man was not to be trifled with but also remained fearless.
The geezer growled, "I'm sure you're smart enough to understand, so I'll be blunt—I'm a member of the Costner family, and though you just spoke with Derek, you must understand that he does not speak for the entire family…. Or me, at least. So, you will leave Shanton right now, or everyone will have to take this bitter pill."
Arcus smirk—Pat was right, and the Costners were no pushovers.
Some of them were pacifists, but there were warhawks too!
