It was much better in the tunnel than the cave, as it was walled on both ends with stark white marbles. The stairs were not overgrown with moss from the damp air inside—if anything, it was completely smooth and clean as if it was never damp here!
"It seems that people often used this tunnel," Frank said, putting his foot down before accelerating to an intersection.
"Which one should I take?"
Alda shook her head again. "I only remember what the cave and the tomb looked like. I don't know how to reach the tomb from the cave!"
Frank nodded and stood at the center as he closed his eyes, allowing his hearing to extend further.
Hearing the breeze in each tunnel and judging that the breeze was louder on the left, he decided that it was the right path.
"Whatever. I choose you!"
Still carrying Alda on piggyback, Frank took the left tunnel.
The further he progressed, the narrower the tunnel became. The walls were not tiled with white marble either, and it was natural limestone dripping with cool droplets.
That was when Frank suddenly paused. "Prepare yourself!"
"Huh?!"
Alda did not even have time to realize what was happening when they heard an eerie screeching ahead.
Then, the ground started to shake, and she lost her composure for once and screamed.
That was not the end, as she could see countless shadows suddenly scuttering ahead.
She flashed her flashlight in that direction… and saw that those were all giant rats!
"Argh!!!" she screamed on top of her lungs, as she had never seen anything like that!
"I told you to prepare yourself!"
Frank chuckled and kicked the tunnel wall just then.
Endless pebbles started raining down, and Frank volleyed each away, launching them like bullets through the air. Each found a rat, knocking the rats to keep them from getting too close!
Alda was left gaping—was he actually human? Those were some ridiculous moves!
Frank followed her stare to find a stone table on the bottom clearing, where something so tiny was shining, but it was too small for him to make out what it was!
"H-He's calling for me! I need to reach him!"
Alda began to flail as she attempted to get off Frank's back, but Frank struck her acupoint, knocking her out.
Impressive—but something that could affect a normal person's psyche this much could not be good.
Still carrying Alda, Frank leapt downward, landing steadily on the bottom and walked up to the stone table.
That was when Frank saw what it really was: a ring!
It was quite crude in craftsmanship, however, as the body was made of sheet metal embedded with a gem filled with cracks.
So that was what had been shining!
At the same time, Alda said despite having passed out, "Pick me up…"
