Wyatt, who wasn't exactly a world traveler, didn't waste time with small talk. As soon as the mayor mentioned it, he jumped in with, "What's this Forbidden Forest? And about that archaeology team you mentioned, are there eight of them?"
The mayor glanced at Wyatt, sidestepping the Forbidden Forest question. After a moment, he said, "There are about seven or eight of them."
Wyatt felt a wave of relief. If the numbers matched, Trevor was probably okay for now.
With that in mind, he fished his phone out of his pocket, found a photo, and showed it to the mayor. "Could you take a look and see if this person is with them?"
The mayor squinted at the picture before nodding. "Yeah, I think so."
Wyatt couldn't hide the smile that spread across his face.
"Did they find the entrance?" Mirabella tilted her head slightly, curiosity in her voice.
The mayor hesitated, then, after what felt like an eternity, said, "I told them."
At forty-nine, the mayor had the white hair of someone who'd lived through a lot. He spoke with a faint, bitter smile that hinted at a life full of silent resignation, even in this peaceful village.
Mirabella lowered her gaze, then looked back at the mayor with unreadable eyes. Slowly, she said, "Someone in their group knows exactly where the entrance is."
The mayor looked taken aback, his hand frozen with a pipe as if time had stopped. "You..."
Mirabella knew the mayor well enough. She smiled, stood up, and walked over to the window.
Out in the countryside, night seemed to creep in earlier. In less than ten minutes, darkness had swallowed everything outside. No stars, no moon, just the silhouettes of distant trees and hills.
With a calm gaze, Mirabella turned back, softly saying, "I know you won't tell."
Otherwise, he wouldn't have guarded this village for so many years.

The mayor waved a hand and headed to the small kitchen outside.

James understood there was no rush and nodded. "We'll wait then."
Mirabella gave a soft nod and stepped outside.
Suddenly, it was just Wyatt and the others in the room.
"I'm starting to think the archaeology team planned this trip here all along," Wyatt whispered to James as he joined him.
Honestly, when they found the plane near the village, he'd had a gut feeling about it.
