Mirabella mulled over this before saying, "So, all these years, you kept him close because of this?"

Nellie nodded, "More or less."

"But why hasn't this ever come out?" Mirabella asked, her curiosity piqued. If this tech really worked, the First Base would have shouted it from the rooftops instead of letting it gather dust.

"Because when I took Cassie, I destroyed all the records," Nellie replied with a chill in her voice. "Those folks still don’t know they ever hit the jackpot with their experiment."

Mirabella glanced at Nellie and remembered something. "So, that big mess at the First Base over a decade ago—was that your handiwork?"

"Something like that," Nellie answered softly, sidestepping the part where she nearly lost her life. Despite the First Base's defenses being child's play to her, she was still human and couldn’t dodge all those lethal traps. Luckily, she managed to get Cassie out.

Thinking back, Nellie straightened up and said, "Rea, do me a favor and look after that kid. It’s the least I owe him."

"Owe him?" Mirabella asked, puzzled.

Nellie just gave a rueful smile, "Everyone's got their own agenda."

If she hadn’t had her reasons, why would she have gone to such lengths to save a baby? Just for that, she felt she’d let the child down. Mirabella pondered for a moment, figuring she got the gist, and decided not to pry further. "Alright, I will."
