Mirabella finished reading the message, her almond-shaped eyes twinkling with a hint of mystery. She tapped out a quick reply on her phone: “Okay.”
After she sent it, the other end stayed silent.
She tucked her phone away, got up, and did a quick morning routine. Today, she needed to head back to the Davis estate.
As she reached the bottom of the stairs, she spotted Grady in the living room. His face had a look she’d never seen before—cool and distant. Opposite him sat James, and from where she stood, the tension between them was as thick as fog, like an electric charge crackling in the air.
Mirabella thoughtfully touched her nose and walked over. “Uncle, didn’t you go back last night?”
She plopped down next to James, breaking the silent face-off between him and Grady.
Grady was caught off guard.
The winner was clear.
A slight, knowing smile tugged at the corners of James’s mouth.
Grady could see the challenge in James’s smile, but with Miss Mira right there, he couldn’t call him out. Instead, he cleared his throat and said, “I wasn’t comfortable leaving you alone.”
Especially after his folks discovered that the people behind the attempted kidnapping of Miss Mira's friends might be linked to Phantom Watch, Merrywoods' main base. Letting his guard down wasn’t an option.
If anything else happened, Keir would have his head for sure.
Mirabella knew exactly what Grady was worried about.
With Santos's skills, he would've found out about her ties to the Davis family, so Merrywoods being in chaos wasn’t a shocker.
And the Davis family was probably already under a microscope from those folks.
The kid had this pure and innocent vibe, especially with those bright, clear eyes that seemed untouched by the world’s messiness.
He had a natural charm.
And sitting next to Miss Mira, there was an odd resemblance between them.
If he didn’t know Zach wasn’t the kind to have flings, Grady might've wondered if the boy was Zach’s secret son.
Grady collected his thoughts, nodded at Cassie, and tried to come across as a friendly elder, “Hello.”
Cassie beamed, showing off his pearly whites, then turned to Mirabella, “Sis, are you heading out now?”
