Just as James ended the call, the unfamiliar number rang again almost immediately. This time, he hesitated for a moment before answering.
Hearing the deep voice on the other end, James calmly gave the hospital’s address. The caller, wasting no time, hung up as soon as they had it.
James pocketed his phone and turned his gaze back to the emergency room doors. He was wearing just a thin shirt, seemingly unfazed by the cold. About ten minutes later, Grady arrived, feeling a bit uneasy seeing James so composed.
“What’s the situation with Mira?” Grady asked, clearing his throat.
James, with his handsome features, remained polite, though there was a slight furrow in his brow. “The doctors are still running tests. We’re waiting for the results.”
Grady nodded and decided not to press further. He paced back and forth in front of the emergency room until finally, the light above the door went out.
The door swung open, and a nurse wheeled out a bed. Grady’s eyes fell on Miss Mira, who lay there with her eyes closed as if she were merely asleep, her face pale. His expression darkened as he turned to the doctor. “How’s my lady doing?”
The doctor, sensing Grady’s authoritative presence, replied with courtesy, “We’ve done a thorough examination, and she’s not in any immediate danger.”
Although this should have been reassuring, Grady remained tense. “Then why is she unconscious?”
Grady leaned back, his expression fierce, and after a moment of silence, he spoke, “I really appreciate what you’ve done, James. The Davis family will handle the rest from here, so you don’t need to worry.”
It was frustrating. This was their Miss Mira, yet James always seemed to be in the mix. Even though James had brought her back, Grady had already planned to arrange a generous thank-you gift.
James understood the implication behind Grady’s words. He glanced at the girl on the bed and said, “No need to thank me. Mirabella is my girlfriend, so it’s no trouble.”
Grady’s eyes widened in disbelief. Did this guy have no shame? James, noticing Grady’s expression but choosing not to escalate the situation given Mirabella’s uncertain condition, said, “I’ll look after things here at the hospital, so you can relax. But today’s events definitely need your attention.”
