The Double or more Life of the Fake Heiress (Mirabella) novel Chapter 1640

Compared to the laboratory building, the equipment inside was the real priority. Even if Mr. Hammond felt the pinch from this donation, it had to be spent first.

After hearing Mr. Hammond out, Joen felt a wave of mixed emotions. He glanced at the check in his hand. "It's rare to meet someone so generous."

"Isn't it?" Mr. Hammond said, taking the water offered by Joen's assistant. "In all my years, I've never encountered such a lavish benefactor. So, Dr. Joen, I've been thinking we need to get your student back."

Mr. Hammond's voice turned serious as he spoke.

Joen was caught off guard. "My student?"

"Summer," Mr. Hammond replied, sipping his water.

Joen frowned. "What does this have to do with Summer? I'm not following you, Mr. Hammond."

Mr. Hammond quickly summarized his morning conversation with Grady. "I suspect this wealthy benefactor, with the last name Hawthorne, donated the money because of what happened yesterday."

It's almost routine for parents to spare no expense for their children.

"Hold on, did you say their last name is Hawthorne?" Joen's eyes widened as he caught the crucial detail.

Mr. Hammond paused, then nodded slowly. "Yes, why? Do you know them, Doctor?"

Joen's grip on the check tightened as clarity dawned on him. It all made sense now. Apart from his recent run-ins with the Davis family over Summer, there was nothing else.

Taking a deep breath, Joen swallowed his pride and said, "Summer probably won't be coming back. Since they sent a check, it means they won’t pursue yesterday's incident further. You can relax, Mr. Hammond."

Mr. Hammond studied Joen for a moment, then said, "That seems right, but we still need to address the situation with the student who fell into the water."

Joen had heard enough. He stood up, saying, "You can deal with these things, Mr. Hammond. I have unfinished work in the lab. I'll leave you to it."

Seeing Joen's resolve, Mr. Hammond didn't linger and soon left.

Once alone, Joen clenched his fist, unable to contain his frustration any longer. He slammed the desk hard and tore the check to pieces in anger.
