“Apologize for what? You showed me the unthinkable.” Angela’s grin stretched ear to ear. “Your brother and the Whitethorn men already flew out to deal with Edmund Arnold. The fool tried to bribe hospital staff to kill you–well, he finally shot himself on the foot. They won’t let him walk away.”
“I’ve never even met him, Angela. I can’t fathom why he wants me dead.”
“I may have a clue,” Megan interjected, her voice softer yet steadier. “Rumor has it Mr. Whitethorn adopted a girl who looks strikingly like him.”
“What?” Quinn’s breath caught; the single word slipped out before she could stop it.
Julius… adopted a daughter?
“She’s four, give or take. The resemblance stirred talk that she might be his illegitimate child. Because the child fell under his protection, her mother rose overnight–social circles, endorsements, film sets, her own company. All of it on Whitethorn resources.” Megan watched Quinn carefully. “If you return to Azania, you’ll eventually face that woman and her girl. Be ready, because if the whispers are true–if the girl is really his—then…”
“It’s impossible,” Quinn answered at once. “Julius would never father a child in secret.”
She didn’t merely believe it; she knew it down to her bones.
“You’re not even the tiniest bit suspicious?” Megan asked, eyebrows lifting.
“Not in the slightest. If he were that kind of man, I’d never have fallen for him.”
“But when you two met the other day, Mr. Whitethorn seemed… distant toward you,” Megan said, uncertainty crumpling her brow.
“Things happened over the years; I’m a little strange to him right now, that’s all,” Quinn said, guiding the conversation elsewhere. “Tell me about the girl. Do you think Edmund Arnold took Dawn and targeted me because she looks like Julius?”
“Exactly. He must have thought Dawn could be his ticket into Whitethorn resources. To turn her into a perfect pawn, he first needed you out of the picture.”
Quinn murmured, “That does make sense.”
“But Edmund never dreamed you were the missing Mrs. Whitethorn, and that Dawn is Julius‘ real daughter. Now he–and his entire clan–are finished.”

Quinn felt no concern; Rowan and Fabian would see to Edmund’s downfall.
“So, what plans do the two of you have once this is over?” Quinn asked.
Angela and Megan were both her lifesavers.
Especially Megan–she and her daughter had survived entirely because of Megan’s selfless efforts, given without expecting anything in return.
To Dawn, Megan was family in every sense of the word.
“No matter what plans you have,” Quinn said, “I will repay you properly. If you want to stay in this town, I can guarantee that Edmund and his people will never trouble you again. I’ll also give you a sum of money–enough to buy a good villa and live the life you want. I’ll even help you find better jobs. And if you wish to go abroad or settle in Hexton, I can help with that too.”
One promise after another flowed from Quinn.
Angela and Megan exchanged a glance.
Angela spoke first. “I want to stay in the town. I’ve lived here for so many years.”
“All right,” Quinn said. “I’ll have someone make the arrangements.”
Then she turned to Megan. “What about you, Megan?”
Megan hesitated. “I… want to go back to Azania with you.”
“Back to Azania?” Quinn was surprised.
“I’m originally from Azania,” Megan said. “I was tricked into coming to Kandria back then. I want to return, find a job, and support myself.”
“If that’s all you wanted,” Quinn said, puzzled, “you could have gone back earlier.”
