Quinn’s eyes filled with remorse as she looked at her daughter. “All the hardship she’s endured -it’s because of me.”

Even during Quinn’s months of unconsciousness, that tiny, fragile body had shielded her as fiercely as any seasoned guard.

“You’ve suffered plenty yourself,” Rowan murmured, pain softening his voice. “By the way, how did your

talk with Julius go? When does he plan to lift the hypnosis?”

“He has no intention of reversing it right now,” Quinn answered.

“What?” Rowan’s eyes flew wide. “You’ve found him, yet he still refuses? What exactly is he thinking?”

Gavin, by contrast, showed no surprise at Julius‘ decision.

After all, he had grown up beside Julius. Judging by the man Julius had been before meeting Quinn, Gavin expected him to resist any emotion that let someone else hold the reins.

Much like his father, Joaquin Whitethorn.

Since boyhood, Julius had sworn never to become his father.

And yet, fate had a wicked sense of humor.

The harder you run from a destiny, the faster it pulls you into its shape.

“Rowan, this is between Julius and me. I’ll handle it, so don’t worry.” Quinn offered a faint smile. “Even if he has forgotten our love, he’s still my husband.”

Rowan exhaled a long, helpless breath. “All right. I’ll go deal with Edmund. In about two hours, give Uncle Everett a call and let him know you’re safe.”

“Got it,” Quinn said.

Because of the time difference, it was still around five in the morning back in Celosia; better to wait until Everett was up before phoning home.

Rowan stepped out of the room, his footsteps soft but determined.

Quinn turned to Gavin. “It’s been a while. Thank you for everything these past years.”

“For what?” Gavin lifted a brow.

“For saving Julius‘ life,” Quinn said softly. “Had it not been for you, I might never have seen Julius again.”

Gavin’s heart lurched, surprise flaring in his eyes. “You… already know?” he asked, every syllable trembling.

Quinn inclined her head, lashes shivering against damp eyes. “Rowan told me. Julius once cut his wrists. You found him, kept him breathing, rushed him to the hospital.”

Gavin pursed his lips. That scene was one he never wished to replay.

He drew a slow, steadying breath. “Truth is, Julius never meant to die that night. Back then, he was teetering on madness–reality and nightmare bleeding together until he saw no difference. The blade was instinct. Some part of him believed the pain and blood might guide him back to you.”

Tears glazed Quinn’s vision. “I know. He wanted to stay alive–alive until I could return.”

Had Julius truly been mad back then?

A madman, after all, will rip the seams of reason and do the unthinkable.

After a long silence Quinn murmured, “Were the cuts on his wrist… deep?”

“Deep. He nearly lost the use of his left hand.” Gavin held her gaze. “Quinn, promise me you won’t abandon Julius.” Hypnosis or not, you’re the only lifeline he has.”

If she let go, Gavin feared, Julius might slip beyond saving.

Quinn’s reply was certain. “I have never, for even a second, thought of abandoning him.”

Even when she spoke of divorce, it was the choice of someone who could no longer awaken his love.

If papers were ever signed, they would free two wounded souls from a hollow marriage, not end their bond.

After all they had endured, no one understood Julius‘ former devotion better than she did.

How could she possibly give up on a man who loved her so fiercely?

Gavin exhaled in relief. “Good. I’ll go check on him now.”
