They insisted that Dawn’s eyes were the mirror image of the late girl’s–far closer than those of the child currently acting the part.

If everything went smoothly, Dawn would step into a life of staggering wealth, leaving the Arnolds in her dust. That single thought poisoned Emma with a jealousy so sharp it tasted like metal.

“If you’re in Azania, your precious mother will be half a world away. You will never see her!” Emma hissed, cruelty glittering in her eyes.

Color drained from Dawn’s small face.

Emma kept twisting the knife. She leaned in, whispering, “You may step into the Whitethorn family, but only as a stand–in. And my father has no intention of shipping your comatose mother all the way to Azania.”

“I’m not going to Azania,” Dawn blurted, terror making her voice quiver like a blown reed. “I’m staying in Kandria! Right here, with my mom!”

Emma’s smile spread wider. A cruel glitter danced behind her lashes. “None of this is up to you. You’re nothing but a child. Tell me, what power could you possibly have?”

Dawn drew a shaky breath, fists curling at her sides. “Then I’ll ask Mr. Edmund myself and get the truth.”

“Absolutely not.” Emma threw out an arm, blocking the doorway as though she were the gate itself. “You can’t confront him.”

A chill crawled down Emma’s spine. If Dawn really asked questions, her father’s temper would ignite again.

And when Edmund exploded, the one who suffered his wrath was always Emma.

Dawn let the matter drop–outwardly, at least. But later that night, after silence soaked the corridors, she crept alone toward the study, determined to learn the truth.

She reached the half–open study door and froze. Edmund’s voice slipped through the crack, thin and lethal. “Have you still not located that comatose woman? I don’t care how–find her within two days. If she’s somehow still alive, make sure she dies.”

Horror flooded Dawn’s features. Both hands clamped over her mouth, holding in the scream battling to escape.

The call continued. Edmund’s tone dropped to a conspiratorial murmur. “Afterward, tell Dawn it was the two men who removed the patient who killed her mother. She’ll cling to me then. Controlling a lone child is simple. Once I make connections with the Whitethorn clan, the police department will feast on the favors I pass along.”

Fear carved fresh lines across Dawn’s face. She could trust no police officer–their loyalties might already belong to Edmund.

She had to escape. She had to find Quinn herself.

Heart hammering, Dawn slipped away from the study like a shadow that refused to be seen.

Before leaving, she stuffed the allowance Edmund had once given her into a pocket, then tiptoed to the kitchen and stole enough food to last a day or two.

Well after midnight, she slipped through a side gate of the estate and vanished into the moon- washed fields beyond.

She ran toward the orphanage the only place she knew by heart. Somewhere there, she could borrow a phone and call Megan.

Dawn’s small legs pumped furiously, carrying her down the empty road until blinding headlights suddenly swept across her.

Terror spiked. She bolted faster, lungs burning.

Are they here to drag me back? I can’t be caught! I must go to Mom!

“Dawn, it’s me!” a familiar voice called above the roar of the engine.

Dawn skidded to a halt, dust curling around her shoes.

A figure climbed from the car, and every shard of fear inside the child shattered into desperate relief.

Tears burst from her eyes. She threw herself into Megan’s arms, clinging as though the woman were the only solid thing left in the world.

“M–Megan, I missed you so much,” she sobbed, shoulders shaking.
