Moments later, a physician and two nurses swep in, their shoes whispering across the linoleum. After a rapid check of Laura’s vitals, the doctor readied a syringe and slid the needle into her arm with practiced calm.

“Ms. Wentworth, the headache you’re experiencing is a normal rebound after deep hypnosis. We’ve administered a fast–acting remedy. Give it a little time, and the pain will fade.”

Within minutes, Laura felt the pounding behind her temples melt into a distant echo.

Weston hovered beside the bed, worry carving lines across his face. “How do you feel now?”

“Much better.” She released a long, shaky breath. The next instant, she surrendered to his broad chest, allowing his embrace to swallow the last of her fear.

Weston held her with a gentleness at odds with the desperation in his grip, as though any slack in his arms might let her slip away forever.

“Thank God you’re alive. If anything had happened to you, I… I honestly don’t know…” His voice broke, the last words strangled by emotion

Laura froze, startled by the raw tremor in his tone.

“What exactly happened? I was kidnapped, wasn’t I?” Laura asked, confusion clouding her

eyes.

Instinct screamed for him to charge into that inferno, to drag her out with his own two hands, but soldiers pinned him back, their grips iron.

“When did it happen? Take me to the last place she was seen!” Laura threw back the covers and swung her legs out. Her knees buckled at once, sending her lurching toward the floor.

Weston caught Laura a heartbeat before her knees buckled, his arm tightening around her shoulders with practiced steadiness.

“Easy now,” Weston murmured, keeping his voice low so it would not jar her raw nerves. “You only just came to. Your body is still relearning how to stand. As for the accident… It happened two days ago.”

“What?” Laura stared at him, shock hollowing her eyes. “Are you saying Quinn has been missing for two whole days?”

“Strictly speaking,” Weston corrected, cutting a glance at the wall clock’s relentless sweep, “it has been fifty–two hours since anyone last saw her.”

Color drained from Laura’s face so quickly it was as if the hospital lights had snapped off, leaving her ashen and shaking,
