“Heh…” Gavin let out a nervous chuckle. “I just thought lying to her was worse. You and she only recently patched things up. If you shipped her back to Azania now, do you really think she’d ever forgive you?”
“Better that than seeing her dead!” Julius snarled, stumbling as he rounded the bed. Each breath tore through his chest, but his stare never wavered from Gavin. “I warned you not to tell her.”
“But-” Gavin began.
Julius‘ right hand shot out, clamping around the doctor’s throat before the word was finished.
Gavin’s face turned a bruised crimson as he clawed at the vice–like fingers.
Those five fingers felt like tempered steel, unmoved by all his frantic tugging.
“Quinn… Quinn left a message for you,” Gavin wheezed, words rattling through the tightening vise on his windpipe.
At last, the iron–hard fingers clamped around Gavin’s neck uncurled, one by one, like a vise reluctantly surrendering its prey.
Gavin staggered back the instant he was free, clutching his abused throat. A ragged cough tore through him twice, three times, before a little air returned. “For heaven’s sake, Julius, that was cold–even for you,” he rasped. “I’ve broken my back worrying about you, and this is the thanks I get?”
Julius leveled an icy stare at him, the kind that pinned a man to the spot. “Quinn’s message- what is it? And where is she?”
Gavin rubbed the bruised skin of his throat, then extended Julius‘ phone toward him. “She left you a voicemail,” he said. “Listen first, then go to her. For exact coordinates, talk to Fabian.”
Julius frowned, unlocked the device, and indeed found Quinn’s message waiting.
“Julius, you’re awake, aren’t you. We’re not letting you face your father alone. We chose each other, so we face the consequences together. I’ve moved first. Hurry and catch up. The plan is…”
Julius listened in absolute stillness, the phone pressed tight to his ear. Quinn’s voice was steady, precise, the voice of a seasoned field commander laying out troop movements and assigning roles. According to the time stamp, she had set her operation in motion more than an hour

ago.
Do I race after her now, or follow the instructions she just gave? If I go, her carefully laid traps will be unmanned, maybe even compromised. But if I stay away, how can I sleep knowing she’s out there alone?
“Julius, please trust me. I will find your father and prove that whatever happens, I have the strength to stand beside you.”
The message clicked off, leaving a hush that seemed to swallow the room.
Julius lowered the phone, jaw clenched so hard the muscles trembled. What now? Do I chase Quinn, or do I run her play?
Gavin cleared his throat again. “If Quinn says she’s got it, believe her. She’s no ordinary woman, Julius. Former captain of the Falcon Special Forces–she could outfight you on your best day.”
Julius leveled a shadowed stare at him, cold enough to frost glass.
A nervous shiver ran up Gavin’s spine. “She promised me you wouldn’t lay a finger on me. If you try that stunt again, she’ll never forgive you. Soldiers like her live and die by their word.”
Julius tightened his grip around the phone until the casing creaked. “So Quinnie is the one calling the shots now?”
“Exactly. She pulled rank on Fabian and took command,” Gavin said. “Back in the service, she ran plenty of ops. Boxing in your father will be child’s play for her.”
Julius shot him a sidelong glare. “People from the Whitethorn family aren’t that easy to
corner.”
And his father was a madman–unpredictability incarnate.
Gavin merely shrugged, offering no argument.
“Where’s your car?” Julius asked.
“At the parking lot,” Gavin answered.
“Fine. We’re taking yours,” Julius declared. He strode for the door without waiting for agreement.
“Hey, wait up!” Gavin hurried after him.
