Overjoyed, Amelia put on the white shirt, which looked oversized on her. She even twirled in front of the mirror.
The abrupt ringing of her phone scared her.
Amelia tiptoed to the bed and grabbed her phone. She panicked when she saw the call from her mother.
In the end, she took the call, not wanting her mother to worry.
“Why aren’t you home yet, Amelia? Where are you?” Celeste sounded worried.
“I-I’m fine, Mom. I’m doing well.”
“Where are you now?”
“I’m in Savrow with Steve…”
Amelia plucked up the courage. “I’m not going home tonight, Mom. Steve is upset. I want to stay here and keep him company.”
The silence on the other end of the line put her on edge.
Moments later, Celeste asked in a murmur, “Are you at a hotel or your sister’s property in Savrow?”
“Neither. Steve has his own place in Savrow.” Amelia’s words trailed off. She blushed just talking about it.
“I see you have made your decision, Amelia. Are you comfortable with your decision?”
Amelia batted her lashes in a daze. “Huh?”
Amelia approached Steven and hugged him from behind, her voice soft and tender. “Steve? What’s wrong? Why are you lost in your thoughts?”
Dumbstruck, Steven frantically wiped his tears. However, it was too late, as the woman caught him in the act.
“Are you crying, Steve?”
“I’m fine.” Steven dropped his head to shy away from her gaze. A teardrop slid across his chin into the pot of milk.
Amelia circled him, then gently placed her hands on his shoulders, turning him to face her. She became anxious and heartbroken to see tear stains on his face. Amelia reached out to touch his face. “Fine? Your eyes are red. What’s wrong? Don’t hide the truth from me, Steve. Don’t scare me!”
Steven felt his chest tighten. “I’m sorry to put you through everything today, Amelia. I feel angry and useless.”
