Justin felt a sinking feeling in his heart and quickly turned to Bella. “Bella, I’ll go see them by myself.”
All the gossip and negative comments about Bella were spreading everywhere, especially in a sensitive environment like a hospital. Any disagreements with the families of the witnesses could pose a risk to Bella.
Justin was prepared to deal with it all on his own, but he couldn’t bear to see her go through any of it. It would be too painful for him to witness her suffering.
“I understand your intention, Justin,” Bella said soothingly as she covered his hand with hers. “But they’re really eager to meet me, and if I hadn’t pushed to see Rachel, things wouldn’t have gotten so out of control. I’ve just got to take the lead here, apologize, and show them that I mean it. You know me. Hiding is not my style.”
“I’m not one to hide either,” Justin said, looking deeply into her eyes and holding her hand tightly. “I’ll come with you.”
…
Even though Rachel was placed in a VIP ward with strict privacy and security measures, Steven was still worried that the victims’ families might make a scene at the hospital and damage Bella’s reputation. So, he made sure they were taken to the VIP area as fast as possible.
Bella and Justin stood side by side in the corridor, watching anxiously as Mrs. Mead and the other victim hurried toward them. Despite her calm expression, Bella felt a sense of unease in her heart.
The three individuals stopped in front of them.
Justin’s eyes held a hint of vigilance amidst their icy stare, while Steven also kept a close watch, fearing any impulsive actions toward Bella.
Mrs. Mead still had tears glistening on her face, and her eyes were as red as those of a lioness who had not slept in days. Even though she had not said anything yet, it was clear from the look on her face that she held some strong resentment toward Bella.
Bella clenched her numb fingers and was about to speak when she was interrupted.
“Ms. Thompson! President Salvador! I beg of you... Please, you must save my daughter! I’m begging you!” With a thud, the parents of the other victim unexpectedly kneeled before them.
“Ian, that's enough!” Justin’s eyes narrowed, and his voice was stern.
Mrs. Mead erupted with fury, her finger pointed directly at Bella as she exclaimed, “Helping us?! Is this your idea of helping? If it weren’t for you, my daughter wouldn’t have been subjected to such cruelty! All you cared about was using her testimony to settle your own scores. Did it ever occur to you that it would have an impact on regular people like us? My seventeen-year-old has already endured so much, and all she wants now is a chance at a peaceful life. Can’t you give her that?”
Ian was fuming, his chest heaving with anger, and his eyes blazing with fury.
Since it was Rachel’s mother, Ian did not confront her, but her words still infuriated him. He could not believe how sharp and perceptive Rachel was at such a young age, yet her mother seemed so out of touch.
It felt like Mrs. Mead had not learned anything from life. Could someone with such muddled thinking really be responsible for a child?
“The Iverson family has been keeping a close watch on everything you do. Do you really want your daughter to grow up with no privacy and under constant surveillance?” Justin frowned, clearly annoyed by Mrs. Mead’s lack of common sense.
