Hailey arrived at CY Tech, and this was her first time at Jonah's company. His office tower stretched into the clouds. It was grand and imposing.
Right now, Jonah was the only person she could think of. He was also the only one she wanted to rely on.
Hailey rushed inside. The receptionist looked at her and asked, "Hello, who are you here to see?"
Hailey replied, "Hi, is Mr. Pilsner in? I'm here to see Mr. Pilsner."
The receptionist replied, "Do you have an appointment with our CEO? Only those with a prior appointment can meet him."
Hailey was caught off guard. "I don't have an appointment."
"Then, I'm sorry, you can't see our CEO."
"I'll give Mr. Pilsner a call."
She took out her phone and called Jonah.
The ringtone played again and again, but no one picked up.
What was going on? Why wasn't he answering?
Hailey didn't give up. She called again—a second time, a third time—but the result was the same. Jonah didn't answer.
"Jonah, please pick up the phone!" she prayed.
With no answer, Hailey turned to the receptionist and pleaded, "Hi, I know Mr. Pilsner. I'm a friend of his. I can't reach him by phone right now. Can you please let him know I'm here. He'll definitely want to see me."
The receptionist refused. "I'm sorry, miss. A lot of people say the same thing every day. We've heard it all before."
"I'm not lying. I really do know Mr. Pilsner!" Hailey insisted.
Just then, a familiar voice came from behind. "What's going on here?"
Hailey turned and saw someone she recognized. It was Joanne.
Joanne continued, "Do you understand what I'm saying, Ms. Hailey?"
Hailey replied, "Ms. Lilton, feel free to speak plainly. No one else is here."
"Ms. Hailey, since you're direct, I'll be too. I've been by Jonah's side these past three years. I don't want anyone to come between us. So, I hope you won't come looking for Jonah again.
"Of course, I'm sure Jonah doesn't want to see you either. Ms. Hailey, I trust you have enough self-respect not to cling to someone else's boyfriend and make a fool of yourself, right?"
Hailey's face went pale. She looked at Joanne and said, "Alright, I understand, Ms. Lilton. Then, I wish you and Mr. Pilsner happiness."
With that, Hailey left.
Joanne smiled as she watched her go.
The receptionist said, "Ms. Lilton, let's go upstairs. The CEO's been in a meeting."
