Jonah looked down at Hailey struggling with those handsome eyes of his, and suddenly asked, "What do you mean?"
Hailey's lashes trembled lightly. "What? I don't understand what you're saying, Mr. Pilsner."
He let out a cold laugh and reached out to pinch her delicate chin. "That's not how you acted when you needed something from me. You were all over me then. Do you need a reminder?"
Scenes of them entangled at the private club flashed through her mind again. Hailey's petite face flushed slightly. "Mr. Pilsner, let go of me first."
Jonah's sneer grew colder. "Now the crisis is over, and I'm no longer useful, you want to kick me aside and find the next guy?"
She looked at him. "What do you mean, 'next guy?' Mr. Pilsner, do you have to make it sound so nasty?"
"What part of what I said was wrong? Isn't Lester your next target?" As he spoke, he clutched her chin and dragged her face closer to his. "What kind do you even like?
"You're not into guys like Ewan—the rich heir type—anymore? Are you all about scholarly young professors now? Ms. Hailey, your taste sure changes fast. You haven't been short of men these past three years, have you?"
Hailey's pupils shrank. She hadn't expected him to say something so cruel. His words stabbed her heart like needles, one after another.
"That's enough, Jonah! Shut up!" she snapped.
Jonah fell silent.
She flung him off. "My personal life has nothing to do with you, Mr. Pilsner!"
With that, she turned and walked away.
She felt ridiculous. Was that really how he saw her? What kind of person was she in his eyes?
Just then, Jonah took off after her and grabbed her slender arm.
Hailey stopped. "Mr. Pilsner, what exactly are you trying to do?"
He cupped her face with both hands and leaned down to kiss her.
He was wearing a mask, and that slap knocked it off. The mask landed on the bed.
The room was dark, but they were so close that Hailey could still see his face.
In the darkness, her eyes were like a cat's—bright and clear. Jonah knew she was looking at him. He covered her eyes with one hand. "Don't look."
She knocked his hand away. "Let me go! Don't touch me!"
He was breathing heavily. He lowered his head and kissed her red lips, her soft face, and her long neck again…
Her skin was so smooth and delicate, like silk. He couldn't get enough of it.
With one hand, he pushed up her dress while the other yanked at his belt. His voice was hoarse. "Didn't you say you wanted to thank me? This is how I want to be thanked. Is that okay?"
She struggled. "No! I don't want this!"
