Adam lowered his gaze to Celine, meeting her concerned eyes. She looked at him and asked, "Adam, what's wrong?"
Adam's face grew pale. "I…"
Just then, Hailey approached, and she noticed Adam's unusual complexion. "Adam, what's going on? Are you feeling okay?"
Celine didn't hesitate for a second. She quickly took Adam's wrist to check his pulse.
Adam tried to pull away, but Celine's delicate fingers pressed firmly against his wrist. "Stay still!"
A worried frown creased Celine's forehead.
"Celine, why the frown? What's going on with Adam?" Hailey asked.
It was always unsettling when a doctor's expression turned so serious during an examination.
Celine turned to Adam. "Tell me, what exactly is going on?"
"I'm honestly not sure what's happening," Adam admitted. "But I feel like it's all because of you."
"Because of Celine?" Hailey asked, her confusion evident. "Adam, what are you trying to say?"
"Celine, when I'm away from you, I feel normal. But the moment I get close to you, the pain in my head becomes unbearable.
"The day we were supposed to go to city hall to get married—it wasn't that I didn't want to show up. I was suddenly hit with an intense headache and passed out. You were already gone when I woke up and tried to find you."
Hailey was shocked. "What? So that's what happened! Celine, what's wrong with Adam? What's happening to him?"
"I suspect he's been affected by the Heartstring Venom."
"The Heartstring Venom?" Adam repeated.
"Yes, it's a form of witchcraft from Yoruzen. You've been poisoned by it, which is why you can't be close to me."
"Yoruzen witchcraft? How could Adam have been poisoned with the Heartstring Venom? Who could have done this to him?" Hailey asked.
"Adam, you should have told me."
"The pain hit so suddenly and intensely. It was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I was afraid it might put you in danger, so I just couldn't bring myself to tell you."
"Adam, I'm stronger than you think. Promise me you'll always tell me right away, no matter what. Whatever we face, as long as we face it together, there will be no regrets."
Adam nodded firmly. "Okay."
Hailey grew impatient and interrupted, "Stop with the sentimental talk. It's obvious Carly's behind this. But how does she know about Yoruzen witchcraft?"
Celine and Adam gradually pulled apart, Adam tightening his lips into a firm line. "Carly's definitely not on her own. There's someone orchestrating this."
"Who's the mastermind?"
Adam and Celine exchanged a knowing look. "We'll find out when we pay her a visit."
