Nigel called out, "Adam!"
Adam stopped in his tracks. "Mr. Hampton, is there something else?"
Nigel said, "Since you don't want to marry my daughter, I won't force you. But we signed a marriage contract when the Hampton and Alvarez families arranged this engagement. Bring it to me and tear it up, and our families will officially call off the engagement."
"Alright," Adam replied without hesitation and left.
Carly's face turned pale. "Adam!"
She turned to her parents in a panic. "Mom, Dad, what do I do? Adam doesn't want me anymore!"
Fiona looked at Nigel and asked, "What's going on? Does Mr. Alvarez not have feelings for Carly?"
Nigel sighed. "That's right. Adam has never liked our daughter."
Fiona frowned. "Then who does he like? From the way he acted just now, it's clear there's someone else."
Carly clenched her fists. "Mom, don't you know? Adam likes Celine!"
Fiona froze.
Nigel nodded. "Yes, they developed feelings for each other back in Mercity."
Fiona hadn't expected this, but when she thought about it, a smart and elegant girl like Celine was indeed easy to admire. It wasn't completely surprising.
On the other hand, Carly was livid. "Mom, you have to help me! I want to marry Adam. I must marry him!"
Fiona sighed and tried to reason with her. "Carly, Mr. Alvarez likes Celine, and I can understand why. She's a wonderful girl and deserves his love. Since they have feelings for each other, we should respect that and end the engagement."
Carly sighed. "Mom, Dad, what am I supposed to do now? Adam wants to break off the engagement. Do you expect me to just accept this humiliation?"
"Carly, forcing a relationship will only lead to misery. I can tell that Adam truly doesn't love you. Let it go. There are plenty of exceptional young men in the capital. I'll find you someone who actually cares about you," Nigel said.
"That's right, Carly," Fiona added. "Listen to your father. Let Adam go. Marrying someone who doesn't love you would only lead to misery."
Both Nigel and Fiona had made their stance clear. They had accepted the annulment.
However, Carly refused to accept it. "No! I won't! Do you think there's another man like Adam in the Capitol? He's the only one worthy of me! If I can't have him, then no one else can!"
With that, she stormed off.
"Carly!" Fiona called after her, but Carly was already gone.
