Skyler piped up curiously, "Uncle Gordon, if Caitlin isn't the marrying kind, how did you two get together in the first place?"
Alaina and Beatrice both turned to Gordon, their expressions mirroring Skyler's curiosity.
Gordon explained, "She only agreed after she accidentally found out that I used to be against marriage myself."
"Brother," Alaina said, draping an arm over his shoulders, "I pity you. For about a second."
"I'm not as cold-hearted as your sister. I'll pity you for a full three seconds," Beatrice added, clearly enjoying his misfortune. "It's what you get for being so arrogant all those years! It's about time you got a taste of your own medicine when it comes to love."
Alaina grinned. "See, Gordon? I told you pride comes before a fall. I said you'd end up paying for it one day! And look, it all came true."
Skyler nodded vigorously. "Exactly, exactly."
Gordon shot him a withering glare, and Skyler immediately snapped his mouth shut.
Even though Caitlin was against marriage, Beatrice was still overjoyed. At the very least, her stubborn son was finally in a relationship with her. She bustled off to the kitchen, instructing the staff to prepare an elaborate dinner. She even had them string up festive lights around the mansion and went to the family chapel to light a candle in gratitude.
--
While the atmosphere at the Sylvester Mansion was celebratory, things at the Gonzales estate were considerably more somber.
Keira hadn't smiled once since learning about Caitlin and Gordon.
