"If a child goes astray, the blame lies with the father."
All of this was his fault.
"Grandpa, you don't have to apologize. Your granddaughter's amazing—if I wanted to get into Central Academy, I could do it with or without their help!" Caitlin placed a reassuring hand on Fortune's shoulder, striking a protective pose, as if she were the one looking after him. "I've learned a lot this past year with the Chandlers. Not only can I handle my studies, but I can also make enough to take care of you."
"From now on, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the good life with me!"
Fortune smiled warmly and nodded. "Alright, I believe you, Catie."
At that moment, Fortune simply thought his granddaughter was trying to cheer him up.
It never occurred to him that her words would one day become reality.
They stepped out of the apartment complex, and across the river, a row of elegant villas came into view.
Caitlin grinned. "Grandpa, what do you think of these houses?"
"They're beautiful," Fortune replied, nodding. "I heard from one of my coworkers that there are even swans in the lake here!"
Caitlin pointed across the water. "One day, we'll buy a place right here. I'll even hire a couple of housekeepers to look after you."
Fortune chuckled. "Catie, as long as you care, it doesn't matter where I live. I'm happy wherever you are."
Caitlin didn't bother to explain further.
Soon enough, her grandfather would see her abilities for himself.
Around four in the afternoon, Caitlin got a message from Victor on WhatsApp. He wanted to meet at a café—clearly, he had something important to discuss.
Caitlin arrived on time.
She was barely at the door when a man in a suit came barreling toward her.
He jabbed a finger at her, his face flushed with anger. "You! How dare you show your face, you fraud!"
Caitlin had been called many things at the top of her field—"Boss," "Miss Kensington," "Professor Kensington"—but never a "fraud." For a moment, she just stared at him, puzzled. "Fraud? What exactly did I do to you?"
That's when she realized who he was.
