Warren stared at Caitlin for a long moment, unable to process what he was seeing.
She looked like her.
Way too much like her.
The young woman standing before him—why did she look so much like the sister who had disappeared all those years ago?
It wasn’t just the resemblance to his missing sister. There was something in her features, a faint echo of Hannah as well.
For a heartbeat, Warren’s mind went blank. He felt utterly lost, overwhelmed.
His eyes stung, heat pooling behind his lashes.
He was on the verge of tears.
No one else could possibly understand this feeling.
It had been—what, nineteen years since he’d last seen his little sister? He didn’t even know where she was now. Or whether she was happy. Whether she was safe.
Sensing her husband’s turmoil, Jade gently squeezed his arm, snapping him back to reality. “Warren, this is Dr. Kensington.”
At the sound of her voice, Warren pulled himself together. He drew a deep breath, steadied his nerves, and turned to Caitlin. “Dr. Kensington, it’s a pleasure. I’m Warren.”
“Mr. Richards,” Caitlin replied, her voice sounding just as lovely in person as it had over the phone.
Warren was still reeling, staring at Caitlin’s familiar face. He forced his scattered thoughts into order and managed, “Miss Kensington, if you’ll follow us, our car’s just over here.”
“Of course,” Caitlin nodded politely, stepping forward.
She couldn’t explain it. Even though it was her first time meeting Warren, Caitlin felt a strange sense of familiarity. It wasn’t like meeting a stranger at all. It was more like seeing a relative—an older family member she hadn’t seen in years. There was a warmth, a subtle yearning she didn’t know how to name.
No awkwardness, not the slightest discomfort.
Warren and Jade fell in step behind Caitlin.
Jade, lowering her voice in curiosity, asked, “Warren, what happened back there? I’ve never seen you look at anyone like that.”
He’d looked at Caitlin in such a peculiar way. It was so… odd.
Warren, still trying to master his shock, replied just as quietly, “Don’t you think Dr. Kensington looks an awful lot like someone?”
“Like who?” Jade asked.
