It was eight o'clock in the evening.
Frieda was in the kitchen washing dishes when the doorbell suddenly rang.
"Who is it?" Frieda called out as she walked to the door.
"Delivery," a voice came from outside.
A delivery?
That was strange.
She hadn't ordered anything recently...
Frieda peered through the peephole.
A man in a blue delivery uniform stood outside, holding a large box. He wore a hat, the wide brim obscuring his face.
It wasn't that Frieda was overly paranoid, but she had made a lot of enemies over the years and feared retaliation.
Frieda glanced towards the bedroom and called out, "Xander, did you order something recently?"
Xander was in his room playing a video game, headphones on, and didn't hear her.
Frieda walked into his room, pulled off his headphones, and asked again.
"Yeah, yeah, my new graphics card arrived," Xander nodded, then put his headphones back on.
Only then did Frieda relax and open the door.
"Hello, where would you like me to put this?" the delivery person asked.
Frieda looked at him. Although he was wearing a mask that hid his face, she felt a vague sense of familiarity. She dismissed the thought. "Bring it in! Open the box so we can inspect it first."
This was her standard procedure for deliveries. Even if she ordered a pound of cookies online, she would weigh them in front of the delivery person. If she found the seller was short by even a fraction of an ounce, she would immediately file a complaint with the consumer protection agency and demand tenfold compensation.
"Of course," the delivery person nodded, carried the box inside, and placed it on the living room floor. "I'll open it for you."
"Go ahead."
The delivery person opened the cardboard box. Just as Frieda was expecting him to pull out a graphics card, he instead pulled out a sharp fruit knife.
Before Frieda could even react, the sharp blade plunged into her abdomen.
He stabbed her again and again.
