The Day Our Promise Breaks (Charles and Evelyn) novel Chapter 577

As soon as she woke up, everything unfolded exactly as Aaron had predicted—she was completely under the drug’s control.

Her body moved on instinct. Turning her head, her soft lips pressed against the side of Charles’s neck.

Her hot breath skimmed across the exposed skin, sending shivers racing through Charles.

His body went taut in an instant.

This kind of bold intimacy existed only in Charles’s memories and dreams.

To suddenly have it again—Charles nearly lost control, his emotions and desire for Evelyn surging so fiercely that he almost pulled her onto his lap, claiming her right then and there.

He tamped down the urge as soon as it flickered through his mind.

He couldn’t.

“Eve, sweetheart, listen to me. Just hold on a little longer.”

Summoning every ounce of self-control he possessed, Charles gently pulled Evelyn’s face away from his neck and cradled her against his chest.

“I… I can’t… It’s so hot… Please, help me…”

Evelyn squirmed in his arms, her voice thick with desperation.

Charles tightened his grip around her waist, holding her still, trying to keep her from moving too much against him.

He softened his voice, soothing her, “Eve, I know you’re uncomfortable. Just a bit longer, okay? I’ve already called Andrew—he’s on his way to my place right now…”

Evelyn’s clouded mind barely registered Charles’s words. She was all instinct now, lost to reason.

All she knew was that it was Charles holding her.

She couldn’t lift her head from his chest, so she simply parted her lips and pressed a kiss to his skin.

Charles felt his blood turn molten.

His hand on the back of Evelyn’s head trembled, the veins standing out as he forced himself not to lose control.

“Eve!”

His voice was rough, almost pleading.

Again, he pried Evelyn from his embrace.

Her eyes, misted and unfocused, met his. His chest heaved with effort, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed hard.

It was pure agony making it back to his apartment.

With kisses and whispered comfort, he managed to get her home.

Andrew was already waiting at the door.

Charles’s shirt was drenched in sweat. He held the restless, feverish Evelyn in his arms as he hurried inside, calling back to Andrew, “Hurry, give her the antidote.”

Andrew had the medication ready and immediately administered it to Evelyn.

Having been through this before, Charles waited anxiously, knowing she should come back to herself soon.

Andrew, just to be safe, didn’t leave right away. He stepped aside, waiting for the antidote to take effect.

But as minute after minute ticked by, Evelyn didn’t improve. Charles, strung so tight by her desperate touches, felt himself nearing the breaking point.

He called Andrew back in.

Andrew quickly examined Evelyn, his expression shifting as he realized something was wrong.

“Charles, the drug in Ms. Evelyn’s system—there isn’t an antidote for it on the market right now…”
