"Leopold, why can't you guys just hang out outside? Everyone should be together, poor Megan can't even get in; Melissa complained as she walked over.

"The woods are crawling with bugs. Aren't you guys worried about getting bitten?" Leopold replied, his voice laced with a chill that matched the evening breeze.

“There are so many poisonous bugs in the mountains, and we're not going out there.” Skyler chimed in, with a shiver at the thought of creepy crawlies.

At the mention of poisonous bugs, Melissa quickly rummaged through her bag, pulled out a can of bug spray, and went to town dousing herself in it.

Megan's eyes drifted over to the neighboring tent where Aurelia was stretched out, blissfully lost in the world of her handheld game.

Catching Melissa's eye, Megan nodded subtly towards Aurelia’s tent. In silent agreement, the two of them ducked inside.

Aurelia frowned at the intrusion, “Couldn't you ask or something?"

“We just wanted to chat,’ Melissa shrugged nonchalantly.

Aurelia was unconvinced, "Chat amongst yourselves then. I'm busy here."

Melissa glared at her, “Why are you still clinging to Leopold? You guys are divorced."

Aurelia let out a mock laugh, "Why are you still pursuing Elvis even if he hates you?"

That remark hit Melissa like a slap across the face, her temper flaring up.

“Excuse me? Which eye of yours saw Elvis hating on me? If it wasn't for you luring him in, he'd be with me by now."

Melissa patted her back, trying to calm her down, "Don't sweat it. Those are just flings. They'll never be the main event.

"But that might not be the case,’ Aurelia countered with feigned seriousness, "Leopold has promised Katie that if she bears him a son, he'll marry her. It's common gossip among the elite, haven't you heard?"

Aurelia almost believed her own lies. Acting like this was easy, right?

Katie's pregnancy was further along than Megan's, which meant her child would be born first, possibly overshadowing Megan's. Megan knew she had to find a way to deal with Katie.

"I trust Leopold's feelings for me. He would never do that;' Megan insisted, though doubt crept into her voice.

Aurelia scoffed, "Do you even know where you stand? Katie's the innocent one, pure in body and spirit. How can you even compare?"

The words hit Megan where it hurt mast. She knew all too well how Leopold felt about her past. He had hinted more than once that she needed to leave her old life behind, but giving up the power and protection of AK Group wasn't something she was ready to do.
