Leopold’s gaze fell on her cheeks. There was a momentary softness in his eyes, like a frozen lake beginning to thaw. But it was fleeting, quickly replaced by his usual icy demeanor. 

He let go of her hand and picked up a glass of water from the coffee table. 

“Since this is fetal education, you should participate as well,” he said in a deliberately–casual tone. 

“Oh,” she responded softly, understanding that his gesture was meant to let their child feel the love of both parents. 

“I… I’m going to sleep some more.” 

She closed her eyes and tucked her hand under the pillow, feeling the lingering warmth from his hand. 

But she knew, his warmth would never truly be hers.
