“You’ve been crying.”
Miles ignored her words, his gaze fixed on the red rims of her eyes.
Even though the tears had dried, the redness and swelling wouldn’t disappear in an instant.
“No, I haven’t!” Felicity widened her eyes guiltily, feigning realization. “Oh, my eyes? Yeah, they felt a bit uncomfortable on my way home today. Might be pink eye or something.”
“I’ll take you to see a doctor,” he said, moving forward to grab her hand.
Felicity instinctively stepped back. “No need, I’ve already seen one. We have some eye drops at home.”
“…”
“Is there anything else? If not—”
“Felicity, I did promise to give you a month to think things over, but at the least, during these thirty days, I’m still your brother.”
Putting aside all other roles, Felicity had grown up trailing behind him.
Seeing her suddenly act so distant, how could Miles pretend everything was normal?
“I am your brother, huh? I didn’t say otherwise.” Felicity mumbled, lowering her lashes, avoiding his gaze.
At that moment, she was somewhat grateful she was much shorter than Miles.
As long as she didn’t look up, or he didn’t lean down, their eyes wouldn’t meet.
The silence came suddenly.
Both maintained a tacit understanding, neither speaking nor moving.
Standing still for nearly a minute, Miles broke the silence on a hunch, “What exactly happened? Talk to me.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Felicity!”
His tone, when he used it like that, meant he was angry.
This was the first time Felicity had heard him use that tone since they had reconnected.
Knowing she couldn’t dodge the issue, she spoke softly, her head down, “Period cramps. I cried from the pain. It’s such a personal thing; I didn’t want to tell you, but you kept asking.”
“…How can it be so painful? Should we see a doctor?”
He simply wanted Felicity within his sight. That was the only way he’d feel at ease.
“But I—”
“Felicity.”
“…” She sighed deeply, frowning. “Okay, fine.”
…
Miles was temporarily staying at a hotel.
It wasn’t because the Lopez Corporation didn’t own any property here, but rather his chosen place was under renovation. He wanted to be closer to Felicity’s place.
Essentially borrowing a page from Calvin’s playbook: the early bird gets the worm.
Following him into the suite, they entered a large living room with bedrooms and a bathroom further inside.
“You go lie down. I’ll ask a doctor what you can take to ease the pain.”
After saying this and seeing she hadn’t moved, he simply picked her up and carried her to his bed.
