The door swung open.
A woman stepped inside.
It was Sandy.
She’d come to the office on purpose today—hoping to catch him off guard.
Scott had been dodging her, hiding out. This was her last shot.
Sandy walked up to him, words stuck in her throat, tears slipping down before she could even speak.
“Scott, are you really leaving me?”
Her voice shook.
Just that one sentence, and Scott was helpless.
He looked at Sandy standing there—still the gentle Sandy he remembered. How could she possibly be the cruel woman Tavon said she was?
“Sandy, what are you doing here?” he asked, though he already knew the answer. He was just buying time, not really answering her.
Aiden had already spread the word: Scott and Juliana would never get divorced, and Juliana was the only daughter-in-law the family would ever accept.
Sandy was desperate. Scott had promised to marry her. Now, not only had he broken that promise, there wasn’t even a sliver of hope left.
“I came to ask you just one thing,” Sandy said, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Do you still want me? You’ve been avoiding me. I can guess what you’re thinking, but I just can’t give up. I had to hear it from you. Are we still getting married? Do you still want me and our baby?”
“Sandy...” Scott’s voice was heavy, conflicted. “I’m sorry. I thought I could... but—Sandy, are you really the same person I knew? Who are you—really?”
“Scott, you know exactly who I am.” Sandy stepped in close, taking his hand and gently pressing it to her belly. “I don’t know what gossip you’ve heard, or why you’ve been hiding from me. I just want you to know: if you say the word, the baby and I will walk away. We’ll never be a burden to you.”
Scott’s eyes dropped to her stomach, his hand resting there, feeling the faint stir of life growing inside.
Sandy moved behind him, covering his eyes with her palms, her voice soft and warm by his ear. “Aren’t you happy with me? You believe everyone else, but won’t believe me? I’ve never lied to you. I love you, Scott. I love you—so much.”
Sandy could slip into the role of the devoted lover like it was second nature.
Scott looked confused. “Didn’t you say in the beginning you didn’t care about the title? My love is yours, everything but the name. No one will ever take your place, Sandy. You used to be so gentle, so understanding—weren’t you?”
His words made Sandy want to spit blood. It was true what they said: Sooner or later, you pay the price for your choices.
Sandy’s face went cold. “You expect me to share you with Juliana?”
“Haven’t you already been sharing me with Juliana?” Scott shot back. “She’s my wife. You knew that from the start. Juliana is willing to share—so why can’t you?”
It was shameless, but at least he was honest about it.
Sandy had known the score when she got involved, so why was she complaining now?
Sandy’s jaw clenched so hard it hurt. After all her careful planning, she was still just the other woman.
“Well, I’m not willing anymore,” Sandy snapped. “My man is never going to be shared. If you choose her, I’ll get rid of the baby and leave.”
Scott stared at her, stunned by her coldness. “Sandy, this is a life. How can you just throw it away? Are you really as heartless as your father said?”
