The two biggest heavyweights in the city showing up together left Tavon feeling both honored and uneasy.
Wasn’t it Herman who’d invited him out? So why was Scott tagging along?
Tavon shot Herman a puzzled look.
Herman just grinned and said, “Come on, Dad, have a seat. No need to be so stiff—you’re the elder here.”
Tavon’s oldest daughter, Anastasia, had married Herman. His youngest, Sandy, was now mixed up with Scott. With these two powerful men here, Tavon should have been strutting with pride.
But when he looked at Scott, his face turned sour. He greeted only Herman, pretending Scott didn’t even exist. “Son-in-law, you wanted to have a drink with me. I’ve been looking forward to this. Ana’s been married to you for years, and we’ve never actually sat down for a drink.”
Whatever Scott’s status, Tavon had his older son-in-law’s support—he wasn’t fazed.
Scott greeted him politely. “Good evening, sir.”
Tavon just replied with a noncommittal grunt.
Scott could tell he wasn’t welcome, so he took his seat quietly beside Herman.
Herman called the waiter, ordered a few dishes, poured Tavon a generous glass of wine, then conveniently found an excuse to step out, leaving Tavon and Scott alone at the table.
As soon as Herman left, Tavon couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Mr. Stranz, are you really planning to give Sandy a proper title? You might want to think twice about that.”
She was his daughter, but Tavon didn’t want Sandy marrying Scott.
Scott found it odd. Wasn’t this the time when a father would be pushing him to take responsibility?
Why was Tavon warning him instead?
“Sir, Sandy’s carrying my child. As a man, I should step up and give her—and our baby—a real family. That’s the right thing to do.”
