Anastasia was the first one to question how Tavon really died.
If Sandy said she wasn’t nervous, she’d be lying. She’d already crossed the line, though, so she’d braced herself for moments like this.
Sandy squared her shoulders and shot back, “Anastasia, what are you even suggesting? Dad passed away, and as his daughter, of course it’s my place to take care of his estate! You’re the boss’s wife at Elysian Technologies—now you’re trying to smear me just to get your hands on Dad’s inheritance? That’s just low. Admit it, you’re still mad at me for keeping Herman from you, aren’t you?”
Anastasia fixed her with a cold, steely stare. “Cut the crap, Sandy. Look me in the eye and say it again—was Dad’s death really just an accident?”
“It was,” Sandy insisted. “When I went to Nabb Mount to deal with everything, the local police told me straight up: Dad slipped and fell off the cliff. If you don’t believe me, go ask the police yourself. You have no evidence for your accusations. Why, Anastasia? You already have everything anyone could want. Why won’t you just leave me alone? Why push me this far? I saved Herman’s life, didn’t I? If it weren’t for me, you’d have been a widow by now.”
As she spoke, Sandy’s voice trembled and her eyes turned red, as if she were the one being wronged. To an outsider, it would’ve looked like Anastasia was picking on her.
“Sandy, spare me the performance,” Anastasia said icily. “You know exactly what you did to Dad—I know it, too. You drugged him. You almost killed him once already. Even if his fall was an accident, I wouldn’t put it past you to have had a hand in it, not with how cold-blooded you are.”
“So now you’re accusing me of killing Dad? Where’s your proof?” Sandy was nearly shouting. “If you have nothing, I could sue you for slander!”
“Why are you so agitated?” Anastasia’s voice was like frost. “Where’s Dad’s death certificate? I want to see it for myself. I want to know exactly how he died.”
“You don’t have the right,” Sandy snapped, pointing at the door. “No matter how far the Morton family has fallen, this is still my home. Get out.”
Anastasia stepped forward, unflinching. “Sandy, you know what you’ve done—and so does the universe. I hope, when you lie in bed at night, your conscience lets you sleep.”
Sandy tried to steady herself. “I haven’t done anything wrong. I sleep just fine.”
Anastasia didn’t say another word. She hadn’t come here for a confession—just to rattle Sandy’s cage. The real game was still ahead.
After Anastasia left, Sandy collapsed onto the sofa, her limbs numb, her hands and feet tingling.
