“The new chips that will be launching next year will be called SonEx 23. Our plan is to make this chip faster yet more affordable… 

I paused in my listening to the project manager as my phone vibrated. 

It was Landon. 

1 furrowed my brom, stood up, and exited the meeting room. Something had happened to Lilian’s father for Landon to call me. 

1 answered the call. “Is there a problem?” 

“Sir, Leonardo Damel was nearly killed,” he said in a hushed tone. “It appears Rodriguez was behind it, as they know they’re losing the case,” 

My brows furrowed even more upon hearing this, and I clenched my jaws. “How is he?” 

“He’s being treated at the hospital. What should we do, Sir? I have one police officer guarding him. The one who stabbed him is detained in another jail. High–ranking police officials are involved; they’re protecting him.” 

Til call Monravon, and he’ll brief you once he arrives,” I said, ending the call, 

As Steven had mentioned to me, this case was challenging, and there was a potential threat to Damer’s life. 

What were they so afraid of? It seemed that Mr. Damet knew something they wanted to keep buried. 

I called Macken. He answered after a few rings. 

I heard moaning in the background. “What’s up? I’m busy right now,” he said hoarsely. 

“It’s urgent. Steven had problems to handle, and you’re handling his case for the meantime,” I said, refraining from the temptation to smoke as I had an ongoing meeting to attend. 

“Who’s that? Why did you stop?” I heard a woman’s voice

“Okay, I’m going. Just tell me what to do!” he said. 

“We’re done” I heard him say to the woman and I heard a gasped on the line. 

“Ill text you what to do,” I replied, ending 

the call 

Then I returned to the meeting after sending his instructions. 

When the meeting ended precisely at five, I called Lilian, but she didn’t answer. So, I texted her, but even after almost two hours, she didn’t reply. 

1 paced back and forth in the office. Where was she? Why wasn’t she responding? Did she see my text? 

Did something happened on her? 

“Achilless,” I called my secretary. 

The door opened, and he entered while sipping his coffee. 

“Yes, Sir?” he asked 

“Call the mansion to check if she’s home, 1 instructed. 

“Who’s ‘she’r he asked, puzzled. 

“Stop annoying me. Jau do what I told you,” I snapped. 

He grinned and left. He returned not long after 

“Any news?” I asked.

Chapter 13 

“Let’s go to the hospital,” I said, grabbing my coat and putting it on. Then I walked straight out of the office.

She’s not here. Where could she be 

So, I called her, and she answered promptly.

“Where are you? You’re not at the hospital,” I said. 

It took her a few seconds to respond as I walked down the stairs. 

“Do we have something to talk about?” she asked, yawning. 

“Where are you?” 

“Is there a problem?” she asked again.

I was getting annoyed with her repeated questions without answering mine. “Where are

As soon as I heard her answer, I ended the call. 

I teased Achilles that I would be leaving the hospital. 

I took large strides towards the hospital’s entrance and got into the car. 

“Is she there!” he asked as the car started moving 

“She’s at G Park,” I replied, leaning back in my se

The car turned in the direction of the park, and within a minute, we were there. I instructed him to stop at the park’s entrance and got out. I walked while searching for her inside. Where could she be? 

So, I called her when I didn’t see her. 

“Hello?” she answered, sounding like she was chewing. 

“Where are you in the park 

I was about to speak when I saw her, eating and holding a food plastic. 

So, I approached her immediately, uncertain about how she would react to what I had to say. 

“Is there a problem?” she asked with a puzzled expression,

“Why can’t I visit him?” she asked in disbelief, trying to hold back her tears. 

“In their policy. But don’t worry, my lawyer will handle it so that you can visit your father soon. 

“What did they say about my Dad’s condition? What happened?”

“Someone stabbed him…” I said with difficulty. Her mouth gaped. She stared like I was 

“I’ve called someone to confirm his condition,” I said. “For now, let’s just wait. Let’s go.” 

She didn’t say anything, just nodded, and I walked ahead of her. 

The silence between us was deafening as she stared out of the car window. 

I knew she was crying from the way she wiped her face. 

I texted Macken to get an update, but he hadn’t replied. Landon hadn’t provided any information about the condition of Lilian’s father either. 

I’m terrible at comforting, and I didn’t know what to say. There was an urge in me to want to comfort her with a hug. 

1 gritted my teeth, and I wanted to smoke at that moment. 

They would pay for what they did. I glared out of the window, my hand clenched into a fist. 

I swear with that. 

I looked at her when I heard her sobbing, and I couldn’t comprehend why my heart ached. Was I losing my mind? Or was I really having a heart 

1 took a handkerchief from my pocket and handed it to her. 

“Use it,” I said, looking at what I held 

“No, I don’t need it,” she refused in a choked voice. “I’m sorry for cr

Her lips quivered as she turned her face towards the window, 

I took her hand and placed it on the handkerchief. You need this, your hands are soaking wet.” 

She clutched the handkerchief tightly, took a deep breath, and said, “Thank you” 

Then she wiped away her tears and sniffled. I don’t understand why this is happening to me. What did I do? Why is my family going through all of this?” she uttered as she cried. “Am I that unlucky?” 

I saw Achilles glance at the rearview mirror, and his expression turned sympathetic as he looked at her. If he were in my position, I knew he would oder comforting words, while I was at a loss for what to say. 

Then she let out a bitter laugh that furrowed my brows. “Are you alright?” I asked. 

She looked at me, her eyes filled with fear and anger. “My mother is right. I was born as misfortune. Her words are true. Their life got worse when I was born. I’d rather sacrifice my life for them to have a better one,” she said in a choked voice. 

“You are wrong” I said suddenly, not knowing why those words came out. 

“You don’t know me,” she replied, wiping away tears that seemed to never stop. “Look at how my life has turned out; it keeps getting worse and worse. First, my mother, then my father. What’s next! I don’t understand, why? Why? Why?” she exclaimed in frustration. 

I raised my hand to touch her arm, but I stopped myself and clenched my fist, placing it in my lap. 

What did I really know? Because I had felt the same way, felt terrible about my life

“Sometimes we wish something didn’t happen, but that very thing that happened brings out the worst in us,” I said softly enough for her to hear. gaging out of the window. “But that’s life; it drags us down at times 

I had one wish in my life–a wish to undo something that had already occurred.
