The Billionaire's Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband's Regret) novel Chapter 44

Megan.

I pace the living room, my heart racing with worry and frustration. I stop in front of the window, gazing out at the massive parking area of the Steele Mansion.

‘Where could Kayden be? Why hasn’t he come home yet?’

It’s way past midnight. Every tick of the clock feels like a heavy drumbeat of anxiety in my ears.

I keep dialing his number. But at first, he just completely ignored my calls. Now, his phone is unattended. He didn’t use his driver. Tara has no idea where he went.

Could it be that he went to see Cassie?

That leech! If before, I didn’t have a strong hold of Kayden, now, with this baby, I do! I am carrying Kayden’s first-born. This baby is going to be the heir of Steele Corp. He will inherit the Steele empire. And he is MINE! Cassie has nothing on me me now.

Except…

The memory of Myron and my stained underwear comes to my mind. I quickly shake it off.

‘This is Kayden’s baby. Not Myron’s. There was no way I fucked Myron that night!’

I wish I can remember everything, so I’ll know for sure. But nevertheless, I will never accept this baby if it was Myron’s! He’s a Steele, too. But he’s poor compared to Kayden. I will not settle for anything less. And I will do whatever it takes to get Kayden.

Finally, the main doors open and I see Kayden being assisted by a handsome guy I have never seen before. My heart lurches in my chest, my anxiety peaking at the sight of Kayden looking disheveled and out of sorts.

“What happened?” I ask.

“He drunk himself to oblivion,” the guy replies. “Literally.”

“He rarely gets drunk! What forced him to do this?”

The guy doesn’t answer. “Where is his room?” he asks instead.

“Upstairs.”

I lead the guy into Kayden’s room, as he half drags, half carries Kayden. He lays him down on the bed.

“This…” Kayden stammers. “I don’t sleep in this room! Get… get me out!”

“What do you mean you don’t sleep here? This has always been your room!” I mutter. I turn to the guy. “I’ll take care of him.”

“And you must be?”

He doesn’t know who I am? Who is he?

“I should be asking you that question. Who are you and what are you doing with Kayden?"

“Oh, I’m sorry. Let me introduce myself. I’m Adam Richards. Kayden’s old roommate, his college best friend, current confidant, and forever partner in crime.” He gives me a mischievous smile. “Since you do not fit the description of his ex-wife, then I am assuming you are Megan.”

“I thought you are his confidant. How come you don’t know me?” I have a feeling I’m not going to like this guy.

He smirks. “Well, ain’t that a wonder.” I am not sure what he means by that. He turns towards the door. “I am going to leave him in your able hands.”

And then he was gone.

The nerve of that guy!

And how come he knows about Cassie and he doesn’t know me?

“Cassie…” I hear Kayden moan. “Is that you?”

“Eeeee! Damn it!” I groan. I hate it that he’s calling Cassie in his sleep.

I turn to leave but then I feel him pull me back so I’m sitting on the bed beside him. I glare at him, but then he laughs.

“I’ve always liked it when you’re angry, love,” he says. “I may have acted cold or irritated every time you pout or get angry, but the truth is, I’ve always found it fascinating.”

Is he talking about me? Or about…

“And your eyes…” he says. “I’ve always found it stunning. I already thought they were the prettiest eyes I’ve ever seen, but now… you tell me that you have different colored eyes? Damn it! That’s even more amazing!"

Fuck! He’s not talking about me. He thinks I’m Cassie! Cassie has two different colored eyes, which I always found spooky! When we were growing up, I thought she was a witch.

I feel Kayden cup my cheeks between his palms. “Cassie…” he says. “Don’t ever cover your eyes again. They’re unique and pretty. Exactly like you.”

Really? He finds Cassie’s eerie eyes pretty?

He leans forward and gives me a kiss. I welcome his kisses, though I know they aren’t meant for me. “Cassie… I’m sorry, love.”

He really thinks that I’m Cassie, damn it!

This is probably the first time that Kayden is baring his soul to me. But fuck, he’s mistaken me for someone else. How pathetic am I?

“Cassie, I love you!” he says. “If… if you give me a chance, I will spend the rest of our lives making it up to you. I will erase all the bad memories I gave you in the past. I will be a better man for you and our children." I hear the tears in his voice. He means every word he’s saying to Cassie.

I fish my phone out of my pocket. Without him noticing, I hit the record button.

“I love you,” Kayden continues. Tears rolling down his cheeks. “I promise that I will make you happy for the rest of our lives. I will not give you a reason to cry, except for tears of joy. I will be the best husband and a wonderful father to our children. Just please… marry me. Choose me. Spend the rest of your life with me.”

The look on his face is one of pure desperation and longing. It's as if he's pouring his heart out to the one woman he has ever loved. The heartbreak in his eyes is undeniable as he waits for a response. Cassie’s response. I am not Cassie… but right now, Kayden doesn’t know that.

I take a deep breath and nod. “Yes, Kayden,” I say. “I love you, too. And I will always choose you. I’m going to spend the rest of my life with you and our baby! I love you.”

I lean forward and kiss him passionately. He wraps his arms around me and kisses me with fevered passion. I seize this moment. I push his coat off his body and unbutton his shirt.

“My phone,” he replies.

“If it isn’t in your pocket then it’s not here.”

“You need to go, Megan,” he insists.

“Is that how you’re going to treat me? Your fiancee, the mother of your unborn child?” I snap, sitting up from the bed.

“Fiancee?” he echoes.

“Yes! You confessed your feelings for me last night, and then you asked me to marry you. Don’t you remember any of that?”

He raises a brow at me. “That’s impossible. You’re lying!”

I shake my head. “I am not!”

“I can’t possibly confess my feelings for you,” he snorts.

“But you did! And you promised to take care of me and our unborn child. If you don’t believe me, here. Listen to your love confession.”

I play the recording of his love confession. Realization dawns on his face.

“Remember now?”

He presses the skin between his nose, as if he is having the worst nightmare of his life. “How… how did that happen? You must be mistaken.”

“But I’m not! Don’t tell me you confess your love to just any random woman?” I put a pout on my face, pretending to be hurt. “How could you deny this after everything that happened to us last night?”

“Look, Megan,” he says in a firm voice. “You may think that I confessed to you last night, but no. You’re mistaken. I was drunk out of my wits. I can’t even remember how I got here. I’m sorry but this is a mistake. I didn’t mean those words for you… I…”

“You meant them for another woman? How can you be so mean, Kayden?” Tears roll down my cheeks. “What am I going to tell people now?”

“What do you mean tell people? We haven’t told anybody anything.”

“But I did.”

His eyes widen in shock. “You did what?”

“I did… what any woman would do after getting a proposal from the man he loves. I announced it on my social media pages. In fact, I couldn’t pull the right words, so I just reposted your recording.”

“You what?” he roars. “Take it down right now!”

I shake my head. “I can’t. Rule on this social media platform I posted to is if your post reached at least a hundred thousand, you can no longer delete it. And right now, your love confession and wedding proposal is at… five hundred thousand likes and counting.” I wave the phone in front of his face.

“What the fuck did you do, Megan?” Kayden glares at me. His face looking like murder.
