After the gala, Isaac followed Elijah into the sleek black Bentley parked outside.
"Seraphina's already on her way back. I bet the Donahues caught wind of it."
Elijah raised an eyebrow. "And so?"
"We need to deal with the Donahues, pronto."
Isaac was eager to accelerate their plans, and Elijah had no objections, merely stating, "You vanished for nearly half an hour during the dinner. Where did you go?"
Isaac knew Elijah had eyes on him at all times. But that half-hour was a mystery.
Aware that Elijah had been tracking his movements, Isaac's patience wore thin. "Mr. Ulbricht, we're partners. You saved me, and I'm helping you with your plan. This is a mutually beneficial arrangement. I'm not your subordinate, and your constant surveillance seems to contradict the spirit of our partnership."
Elijah, knowing full well the challenge Isaac posed, didn't want to push too hard and conceded, "Understood."
Feeling the tension in the car, Isaac opened the door. "Mr. Ulbricht, let's catch up another day."
After he left, Elijah's assistant couldn't hide his frustration. "Mr. Ulbricht, he's really pushing his luck. If it weren't for us, he'd be six feet under."
Talking back to the man who saved his life? Was he looking for trouble?
"Let it go. He's key to our plans right now. We can't afford to upset him," Elijah rubbed his temples. "Just make sure our guys are smart about it. We can't afford slip-ups."
"Got it."
Back at his apartment, Isaac pushed open his bedroom door, spotting a set of women's pajamas on the bed.
They belonged to Brittany.
Picking them up, he was enveloped by her scent, almost as if Brittany were right there with him. He lingered for a moment before heading to the bathroom.
Meanwhile.
Returning to the gala, Brittany caught sight of Seraphina making a move on Isaac. She was livid.
"What's wrong?"
Ysabel noticed her sour expression, as if Brittany had just knocked over a jar of vinegar.
Sure enough, by the next morning, rumors of tax evasion and substandard project inspections involving the Donahues had spread like wildfire. The entire Donahue clan was hauled in by the authorities.
With the news breaking, their stocks plummeted, resulting in losses in the billions!
Such a dramatic turn of events couldn't help but seem orchestrated.
"The Donahues are done for. It's said they were reported... with solid evidence!"
"Who's behind it?"
"Who else but Elijah?"
"After the Ulbrichts fell, the Donahues kicked them while they were down, seizing their assets. With Elijah's comeback, revenge was inevitable."
"And Octavia, she was with Elijah for a good five or six years. Who would've thought she'd be the first to abandon him when trouble struck?"
"As the saying goes, 'In prosperity, our friends know us; in adversity, we know our friends.'"
