Chapter 55
My uncle is really good at sparring. He wouldn’t teach this class if he wasn’t. But I make him work hard for it today. I land as many hits as he does. I knock him off his feet as many times as he knocks me off mine. I land as many ‘winning’ shots as he does, but he doesn’t call the end of the battle, so we keep fighting.
I have no idea how long we’ve been at it. I’ve long since stopped noticing anyone except Dane. My body is screaming from muscle exhaustion. I’m covered in so much sweat it feels like I’ve been standing in the pouring rain, and I’m breathing so heavily that I’m starting to get dizzy.
I swing another punch at Dane’s stomach. Instead of blocking me, he grabs my wrist, and in a move I admire deep in the recesses of my mind, he spins me around, locking his arm across my body as he pulls my back against him, grabbing my free hand and pinning it to my chest. before I can elbow him with it.
He leans down to my ear.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you,” he says softly, his breath coming in pants against my ear.
I struggle to get away, but he holds me tightly.
“I didn’t think about how breaking Shane would hurt you and I should have. I underestimated how close the two of you are. I never meant to break you twice, Sebi. Shane’s break wasn’t supposed to impact you the way it did. An Alpha’s break is meant to be for them alone, and his break hurt you almost as much as it hurt him. For that, I am sorry.”
“You hurt me, Dane,” I whisper, my voice breaking.
“I know and I’m very sorry for that, Sebastiana.”
I nod, letting my aching body relax. When he releases me, I realize that we’re the only two still out here on the sparring field. I have no idea how long we’ve been going at it, but it’s been long enough that everyone has gone inside for lunch. Or maybe lunch is already over.
I turn and look at my uncle. He opens his arms, and I only hesitate a moment before walking into them and letting the familiar feel of my family’s embrace surround me. We stand like that for several moments, both of us still panting..
“That was fucking fire, by the way,” he says as I start to pull away.
I smile. “I was pretty angry.”
“No shit. But now that I know what you’re really capable of, I expect to see that level of fighting every time you’re in this class.”
“I don’t know if I can sustain that. My muscles are aching right now.
“You can. You’re Hurricane Sebastiana for goddess’ sake.”
We begin walking inside. “Have you and Shane worked things out yet?” he asks.
I shake my head. “Not yet. I’m hoping he’ll talk to me this weekend. Cole gave him a lot to think about in class yesterday. I’m giving him a couple of days to think about it, then I’ll try to talk to him again.
“I heard Cole blew it out of the water. Good for him.”
“Yeah, he’s going to be a great Alpha,” I say.
