Chapter 31

“Shit!” I say, leaping out of bed.

He laughs, tossing me one of his shirts and a pair of shorts.

“Go, I’ll save you some food,” he says.

“Thanks,” I say, kissing him quickly and racing down the hall, not quite looking my brother in the eye as I rush past him. He clears his throat, but I ignore him and keep running to the girls’ hallway.

I shower quickly, checking my side and realizing that my bruises are completely healed. Yes! I can ride The Beast today.

My mind is already working through the fourth and fifth challenges as I head downstairs where Shane has a cup of coffee and a large plate of food waiting for me.

“Ready to get back on The Beast today, Sebi?” Cole asks.

“Yes. I was just working through level four in my head and guessing on how to get past level five based on Shane’s injuries yesterday,” I tell him.

“Fire, obviously, but I need to get past level three and four first,” he says.

“You’ll do fine on level four,” I say and Shane nods in agreement.

“Don’t overthink level three,” Shane says.

He looks between the two of us. “Did you two talk about this?” he asks.

Shane looks at me and frowns. “No, why?”

“I said the same thing to him yesterday,” I say grinning.

He shoulder bumps me, smiling. “Great minds… Seriously, though, you should listen to your friends,” he says to Cole.

Cole looks thoughtful, then goes back to eating.

“I think I’m finally going to try it today,” Cassandra says softly. She never intended to take the warrior track, so The Beast has been very intimidating for her.

I reach over and cover her hand with mine. “You don’t have to be first or win the points, but it’s good to face your fears. Take your time…” I say, struggling not to give her too much information, “except when you shouldn’t, and get through it one level at a time. Don’t think of it as one large obstacle course. Think of it as one level at a time. Focus on the level you’re on, then when you complete it, let that one go and focus on the next. Yeah, it’s dangerous. If it wasn’t we’d all be bored and have gotten through it by now. But that’s the challenge. It’s mental AND physical, which is why I know you can do it. And don’t forget, you can always go in wolf form, although my parents told me that there are some modifications to the machine when you go in wolf form.”

“Thanks, Sebi. I’m not sure I want to run my wolf through fire yet,” she says.

I squeeze her hand and begin cating again.

“That’s actually great advice, Sebi,” Justin says. Shane grins at me as we all become silent, thinking through this morning’s trip on The Beast.

When we get outside and Dane asks who wants to ride The Beast, nearly everyone raises their hand, including me. He looks at me and then down to my side. I turn, moving my arm so he can see that my bruises are gone.
