CHAPTER-THIRTY-THREE.
************************
BRINLEY.
"Xander, what are you doing here?"
Xander breaks eye contact with me and glances at Bane in the stroller, and then he looks back at me.
"So it's true," He says
I frown.
"What's true?"
"That Julia is making a laughing stock out of the future Luna/queen,"
"I'll just wait outside," Dr. Jacob says, walking to the door.
Dr. Jacob paused, glancing up at Xander. They exchanged a look that I couldn't place before the Dr. left the room.
What was that about?
"No one is making me the laughing stock but you!" I tell Xander once we are alone.
"Me?" He says, pointing to himself. I nod.
"Says the girl letting Julia tell her lies and have her slaving for her and her child." He sneers.
"What are you saying? That those things Julia told were untrue?"
"Of course they were,"
My forehead creased. Julia lied? Of course, I wouldn't put anything past her, but it all made sense.
Or so I thought. It's still hard to believe that Xander wants to be with me.
"But you were mad at me," I told him.
"Because you kept things from me. Important things, but I would never have you here to Nanny for Julia." He says, moving close toward me.
Xander places his hand on my cheek and rubs it with the pad of his thumb.
"I Love you, little mate. I would never do anything to hurt you," He rasps.
"I love you too, Xander."
"Let's go home," He tells me and pushes the stroller. I hold onto his arm as we walk out of the office and back to the palace.
"What did the Jacob say?" Xander asks as we walk the moonlit path home.
I glance up and smile at him.
"The baby's organs are good, and he wants to deliver him in two weeks," I tell him.
He stops pushing and looks down at me.
"Two weeks?"
I nod my head.
Xander smiles and continues to push the baby with me right alongside him.
"Wow," He mutters.
"I know it's a lot to take in,"
Xander meets my gaze and smirks, "I'm ready for anything as long as you are by my side," He says.
I look into Xander's eyes, and for the first time, I see love. I've always wanted a mate who loves me, no matter my background or title. And Xander does. He loves me.
**********
Once we got back to the palace, Xander went to his office to attend to some paperwork. I was headed upstairs to find Julia and give her a piece of my mind.
I opened the door to Xander's room, and sure enough, she was sitting at the desk doing her make-up in nothing but a towel.
"I'm on my way to see Xander. You'll have to watch Bane," She says, rubbing a tub of red lipstick onto her lips.
I walk over to Bane's bed and lay him down, and the poor thing is to sound asleep.
Julia stands up, and I stand in front of her.
"Cut the bullshit, Julia. I am Xander's mate. I know you were lying about everything. Xander told me none of it was true. Did you think that I was such a cold-hearted person that you were afraid to ask me to watch Bane? Because I am not that person, if you would have asked me to watch so you could sleep a while, I would have. You didn't have to tell lies to get what you wanted," I paused, shaking my head.
"I'm sorry that you fell in love with someone that wasn't yours to love. But, no, I don't deserve him. He is too great of a guy. But the Moon Goddess made me his mate for a reason. And I love him," I tell her.
Julia's lips part then they close. She's speechless, and this probably hasn't happened to her before.
"I love him, too," She whispers, tears peeking in the corner of her eyes. I nod my head.
"I know,"
Julia starts crying, and I embrace her and hold her while she weeps.
Julia isn't a horrible person. She makes terrible decisions. She fell for a man she knew she could never have deep down. I fell for Xander, not knowing if he would ever feel the same way for me, even though he was my mate. I never knew he would return the feelings, and heartbreak is heartbreaking, and it hurts no matter what.
I know Julia caused this upon herself, but I still feel bad for her.
"Why are you being so nice to me? After all, I did to you?" She sniffles.
"Julia, we were friends. I know you're not a mean person, but I also know love makes you do crazy things," I tell her.
"Look at me, Brinley. I'm a horrible person. I'm not cut out for anything, not even being a mother. Bane cries and begs him to sleep, and he never does. I think about just letting him cry. I even had a horrid thought of throwing him out the window. What kind of mother does that make me?" She rants.
"An ordinary mother. My sister Kelsy said she had terrible thoughts, too, from where she's so exhausted. How about I take Bane tonight so that you can get a good night's sleep?"
She looks at me with wide, teary eyes.
"You would do that? After everything I did?"
"I would,"
"Thanks, Brinley," She hugs me.
"Anytime," I tell her.
****************
"Why is Julia still in my room?" Xander asks as he walks back into the guest room I've been staying in.
"Shh," I shush him, not wanting him to wake Bane. I've done fed the little burger three bottles.
Xander raises a brow.
"Why are you shushing me?"
I give him a deadpan look.
"You're going to wake Bane,"
He frowns.
Me a queen?
I shake my head to rid of the thoughts.
"Do you want to join us?" I ask Katie.
She smiles.
"Yeah, let me go, Annabella," She says, returning to fetch the baby from her room.
*********
Katie and I spent all day at the nun's rental house. Katie has told me most of the day that I should be proud of what I am doing for them. I told Katie that it wasn't enough. I told her that I wanted to design them a new orphanage, and she thought that was a great idea.
Julia came for Bane about an hour ago. I've been reading my favorite book.
THE PRIDE AND PREJUDICE BY JANE AUSTEN.
I was about halfway through my book when Xander came through the door.
"Little, mate. What are you doing?"
I showed him my book.
"It's my favorite,"
He nods and sits down next to me.
"Xander, can I ask you something?"
He nods.
"Of course,"
I told him about everything—the condition of their house. I told him I paid to repipe it and stocked them full of food. I told him about the letters as well.
"I haven't gotten a letter," He mutters.
"Why would nuns lie?"
He shrugs.
"I'm not saying they didn't; I haven't read them. They might have gotten buried under stacks of paperwork,"
"Oh,"
"But I think a new orphanage is a great idea. I can have someone draw up the plans," He says.
"I already have," I told him, standing up and going to get my sketch pad.
I hand it to Xander and flip through the pages.
"You drew these?"
I nod.
"I love it. It's a great place. Now let's make it happen," He murmurs.
I let out a squeal.
"Really?" I ask.
"Yes. You're going to make a great queen,"
