Mr. Yates hesitated for a moment. Deep down, he was desperate for another intense showdown with a fellow tech expert, but he held back. "I haven't touched this stuff in a long time."
Leo didn't buy a word of it. True passion never faded. Even if he hadn't worked in the industry for years, a man like him could never truly let it go.
"It doesn't matter how long it's been. Just think of it as doing me a favor and giving me some pointers," Leo said, turning his head. "Chunky, go grab the laptops from the trunk."
Chunky had no idea what his young boss was plotting, but following Leo's lead was never a bad idea. He got up, headed out to the car, and found three laptops Leo had pre-stashed in the trunk. "Did Leo plan this all along?" Chunky muttered to himself.
He brought the laptops back to the restaurant's private dining room. By the time he walked in, Leo had already locked the door and explicitly instructed the servers not to disturb them.
Once the power and network cables were connected, Leo quietly observed Mr. Yates's movements while Chunky loaded up the main interface.
"Mr. Yates, there's a blue icon on the desktop," Leo explained. "Our main objective is to find the vulnerability in that system and patch it. The secondary objective is to hack each other out of the network while searching for the bug. How does that sound?"
"So it's a free-for-all? One against two?" Mr. Yates asked, his interest thoroughly piqued.
Leo nodded. "Are you ready?"
Once everyone was set, Leo started a timer, and the three of them connected to the local network right there in the dining room.
Leaning back in his chair, Leo watched as Mr. Yates's hands flew across the keyboard with blistering speed. Chunky was practically hunched over his screen, eyes glued to the monitor, his fingers moving on pure muscle memory.
Mr. Yates furrowed his brow, looking more energized and focused than he had in years. From his peripheral vision, Leo kept a close watch on him.
Mr. Yates and Chunky crossed paths in the network first. The two immediately locked horns, each trying to forcefully boot the other out of the system.
Chunky held nothing back. He wanted to test Mr. Yates's real skills. If the man was genuinely talented, Chunky would gladly respect him. If he was all talk, Chunky figured he'd weed him out for Leo early on.
